Find out how else you can celebrate Star Wars Day right here!
We probably know the least about Sabine Wren out of the entire Rebels crew. The mysterious Mandalorian (yes, it’s been confirmed that she’s not just wearing that armor, she’s actually from Mandalore) was once a student at the Imperial Academy on Mandalore, but left for as-yet unknown reasons. She’s the explosives expert, with her custom explosive paint that delivers a bang with an equally impressive view.
We talked with Tiya Sircar, the voice of Sabine, at the Rebels Season Two red carpet, getting her take on her character’s relationships, joining the Star Wars family, and who she hopes to see Sabine paired up with in upcoming episodes.
Tiya, good to see you again. We talked last year about how this has really been your entry into the Star Wars world. Now that you’ve had a year, and you’re at an event like this, what has it been like for you becoming part of the family?
Tiya Sircar: I mean, I will say that when I got this job, it was, of course, so exciting, but also a little intimidating. Star Wars is Star Wars, and there are high expectations, as there should be! You want to make sure that you meet or hopefully exceed those expectations! So initially, there was a bit of, “oh wait, how’s this going to go?” for me. The very moment that our names were associated with this show, there was such an outpouring of support from Star Wars fans. They welcomed us into this family, and it took me by surprise!
People can be so nasty on the internet!
I’ve heard that, yes. (laughs)
TS: (laughs) That happens! But Star Wars fans, for the most part, have just been so lovely and supportive. So that alleviated some of those feelings of anxiety I had going into it. Since then, it’s only been up from there, which is hard to believe because it started out so fantastically.
Now, it’s wonderful. We were at Comic-Con last year, and we were at Star Wars Weekends last year at Disney World, and people were great, but no one had seen the show! So that was still a bit of, “how will they like us once they’ve seen it?” The reaction here has been so positive, so it’s great.
At the press conference, you were the one that brought up the theme of family in the first season. For you personally, though, you had a few scenes with Hera, a few scenes with Ezra, and that was about it! So who are you looking forward to or enjoying interacting with a bit more in season two?
TS: I like that you asked that question, because yeah, I think it’s great that Hera and Sabine have a really strong connection and a bond. I wouldn’t call it Mother-Daughter, but probably an older sister-younger sister bond. I think that’s important, I think it’s great that people get to see a connection between two female characters where there’s no animosity, it’s all love and support. But, we’ve seen it, so now what, right?
I really think โ I’m so intrigued by Kanan’s story and Kanan’s history, which I don’t personally know much about; Freddie knows more than I do. So I’m interested to get to know Kanan more, not in his role as a master to a padawan, but just, what’s his deal? What’s his backstory? I’d love to get to interact with him more on a one-on-one basis. I feel like Sabine and Kanan would be really fun! (laughs)
