There is one universally acknowledge truth when it comes to Supernatural: no one stays dead. The hit drama has featured dozens of surprising and even hilarious resurrections over its lengthy run, and it doesn't seem like Supernatural is done with the trope just yet. During a recent interview, Jensen Ackles teased fans about the return of some familiar faces.

The actor appeared with co-star Jared Padalecki at Entertainment Weekly's Pop Fest this weekend. The pair talked about the on-going twelfth season of Supernatural, and Ackles told attendees a few characters might return to the series.

When the actor was asked if the archangel Michael would return, Ackles refused to tease that character's return specifically. However, he did say this:

"When you have a really good character, and not just that but a really good talented person playing that character, getting them to come back is always a treat for us, and I feel like it's a nice little treat for you guys, as well. I will say there are plans this season to bring back a few of those, so stay tuned."

The actor also said, "I think one of the great things that the showrunners and the writers have done over the years is that they have brought back some of these fan-favorite characters and some of our favorite characters. We are the faces of the show, but we're also fans of the show."

Currently, the show is focusing in on one very special resurrection from last season. Supernatural did what many fans believed was impossible when the show revived Mary Winchester, the mother of Sam and Dean who was killed before the show even began. The trio are now embarking on hunts together as they try to navigate the complication relationships entwining them.

"That's a unique aspect of this season," Ackles said about Mary's presence. "There is that X factor of emotional connection."

Padalecki also talked about the sudden return from Sam's persecptive. "Everybody he gets attached to leaves," the actor explained. "Every time he gets too attached to something, it ends up going away."

Of course, fans don't expect that Mary will stick around forever. While her return has been fairly uncomplicated thus far, it is only a matter of time before the afterlife comes looking for the Winchester. That tends to be the fate for most resurrected characters on Supernatural. Over the years, characters like Bobby, Jess, Ash, and more have been brought back through various means - and it never ends well.

This season, fans are hopeful that one of the returning characters might be that of John Winchester. The character has appeared in a younger form several times since he died in the second season. Viewers are surely wanting to see how the boys' brusk father would treat them after all these years, but it doesn't seem like that John will come back unless the role is recast. Jeffrey Dean Morgan played the character years ago, but he's currently busy scaring everyone as Negan on The Walking Dead these days.

Maybe a raincheck for that fan-theory is needed until the series' finale comes around?
