In 2014, the true crime podcast Serial took the world by storm in chronicling the case of Adnan Syed, who was accused of killing his girlfriend and was imprisoned under questionable circumstances. In 2015, Making a Murderer similarly captured the attention of the world as it chronicled Steven Avery and nephew Brendan Dassey’s incarceration for murdering a woman who came to take pictures of a car they were selling. Following new developments in the real-life case, people wonder if and when we’ll see a second season of the hit show, and a VP at Netflix has weighed in.

Unfortunately, considering filmmakers Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi are waiting on real-world developments in the case, Netflix VP of original content Cindy Holland can’t give a definitive timeline for a new season.
When speaking with USA TODAY, Holland said, “The story is still ongoing, so you will see new episodes coming sometime this year as this story continues to unfold.” She added, “We don’t know when for sure new episodes will be coming.”

To release the initial season of the true crime documentary series, the filmmakers researched and compiled footage for ten years, which resulted in an incredibly enthralling tale of the justice system. Having only been a year since the first season aired, Netflix doesn’t want to rush the filmmakers into releasing something before they’re ready. However, the notoriety of the case following the documentary series has lead to more developments in the past year than when the public was less aware of the controversial case.
“Laura and Moira are (in Manitowoc) shooting regularly and working on what the right story is to tell in the next set, so we’re deferring to them on when it will be ready,” Holland detailed to USA TODAY. “Very few people inside of Netflix actually know the details of what we’re getting because we’re wanting to keep it really under wraps and it is an ongoing case so we’re trying to be sensitive to that.”
The podcast Serial, however, chose to switch gears when making a second season and focused on another controversial legal case instead of continuing to chronicle Adnan’s case.
Do you think Making a Murderer should take a page from the Serial playbook and cover a different case or continue to focus on the Avery case? Let us know in the comments!
