Reynolds took to Twitter to pay his respects to the musical icon. He writes, “George Michael was a kind and gentle soul.” The kind words were followed by, “#Wham.” The hashtag is a reference to the song which was an iconic part of Reynold’s massively succesful Deadpool movie.

During Deadpool, George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” played from Wade Wilson‘s iPhone when he tried to be both funny and romantic for Vanessa at the end of the film. Just before Vanessa took him back, Wade fulfilled his promise and showed up with the song playing. Wade even said, “Wham!” in the film.

Michael’s passing was an unexpected addition to the list of devasting losses in 2016. However, he is now alongside several other musical icons such as David Bowie and Prince, as all three have been taken in the tough year.

The star started his career with the music duo Wham! in the 1980’s, but found success as a solo artist in recent years. His first solo album, Faith, came out in 1987 and sold nearly 20 million copies.

Whether or not Deadpool‘s sequel will pay tribute to Michael is to be seen. The movie does not yet have a release date but Reynolds is in place to star in and executive produce.
