Rings debuted at the number one spot at Friday’s box office. Rings earend $5.6 million in its first day at the box office, opening in 2,931 locations.

That knocks Split, the winner of the past two Friday, down to second place. It was a close battle, as Split earned another $4.8 million on Friday.

While Split may have lost the Friday battle, it is still poised to win the weekend war. Split is projected to win a third straight weekend with $14.3 million earned over three days.

Rings is expected to follow closely behind, with an opening weekend box office of $13.3 million.

In Rings, it is a new chapter in the beloved Ring horror franchise. A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before…

In Split, while the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.
