The 5 Power Rangers Teams That Need Their Own Comics

BOOM! Studios’ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series has become immensely popular, resulting in a spinoff series and a well-received new villain. So the question is, what Power Rangers team should come next?

Now, there’s no information about a third Power Rangers-centric series being even contemplated by BOOM!, but if there was a time to introduce one it would certainly be next year. 2018 is the 25th anniversary of the Power Rangers franchise, and also happens to be when the bi-annual convention Power Morphicon takes place. All in all, the perfect time to announce a new series.

There are some worthwhile addendums to this wishlist though, so let’s hit those first. To get it out of the way, Power Rangers In Space and Power Rangers Lost Galaxy are not included in the list. Now, if you’ll stop throwing the tomatoes for a second that can be explained.

If you’ve been keeping up with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, specifically issue #20, you know that the Green Psycho Ranger was introduced to the series. In fact, the original group of Rangers encountered the Green Psycho Ranger in 1969, and Zordon explains that there are more of them in the universe. So, a theory could suggest that In Space characters like the Psycho Rangers, Astronema, and the Rangers themselves could make their way into Mighty Morphin.

If they do branch into space, then elements from Lost Galaxy could also be fair game, especially now that Lord Drakkon is assembling his own army to take on the Rangers en route to his mysterious goal.

With that said, didn’t include either of them.

Also, the Rangers from Hyperforce would also make an amazing addition to the universe. Seeing as they are only two episodes in though, they got left off the list…at least for now. It’s hard to imagine that anyone would object to seeing those character in their own series, so let’s go ahead and make them our honorable mention.

Okay, with all the hoopla out of the way, here are the five teams that need their own comics!

‘Power Rangers: Ninja Steel’

Okay, so this is a bit ironic since we just went on about Hyperforce being too much of a newbie for consideration. That is true though when you really think about it, as Hyperforce is on episode 2 and Ninja Steel is almost done with its first season.

The Ninja Steel team isn’t going anywhere either, as Super Ninja Steel is scheduled for 2018. While some have their (very valid mind you) issues with the show, there’s just too much cool stuff here to ignore.

The team is quite likable, and the lore associated with the Ninja Power Stars and the Zords provide plenty of space to weave interesting storylines, especially given the proper space that a comic series provides. Mighty Morphin doesn’t suffer from lack of engaging action sequences, but sometimes Ninja Steel does. The right creative team could easily remedy that, and the world of comics would allow the unlimited use of Zords, ninja magic, and other abilities that the shows struggle to fit in.

You could even make the Adventures of Redbot the backup feature for the series, because who doesn’t want to see that right?

‘Power Rangers: Time Force’

As Power Rangers Hyperforce shows, there’s plenty of room to have fun in the world of Power Rangers Time Force, making it a shoe-in for this list.

The premise of tracking down a villain through time is one that can be spectacular in the right hands, and Ransik is a delightful villain to build the story around. In the show, he steals cryogenically frozen convicts and retreats to the year 2001, but the series could change that as needed to allow the Rangers to visit other time periods like seen in Hyperforce.

The themes in Time Force were also more adult than the ones seen in Mighty Morphin, allowing a creative team much more flexibility in terms of narrative and storytelling.

‘Power Rangers: Mystic Force’

Later seasons of Power Rangers would tell mostly self-contained stories during their seasons, pulling in other teams and such for special occasions. This makes it easy to spin off a new comic series without having to avoid any major obstacles, paving the way for Power Rangers Mystic Force.

The realm of magic is made for comics, a medium not constrained by a visual effects budget every time someone wants to throw out a fireball or call in a dragon. Imagine huge battles with legions of undead soldiers as the Mystic Force Rangers fight alongside Udonna to free the world from Morticon once again, alongside rich storytelling that explores the world’s fantastical origins and mythology.

Sounds amazing right? The comic series could really capitalize on the mystical elements this show provides and would be something completely different from Mighty Morphin in BOOM’s catalog.

‘Power Rangers: Megaforce’

Power Rangers Megaforce (and its Super Megaforce followup) are a bit divisive amongst fans, but regardless of where you sit on that fence the potential for a phenomenal comic series is there.

A team of superpowered teens having to stave off a massive invasion from aliens? Yep, sign us up! The scale of these battles could be immense and much more frequent than the show was capable of. To make the most out of it the creative team could pick and choose the best elements from both Megaforce and Super Megaforce, especially the Ranger’s ability to morph into any team of past Rangers.

That could provide a variety of interesting storylines, and fans would prefer to see Megaforce embrace the pirate aspect of their lore. The show seemed to sit on the fence a bit, but a comic series could really explore that theme and make those battles look insane.

‘Power Rangers: Turbo’

Power Rangers Turbo might just be the easiest spinoff to make for the comics universe, as it already has a few great things built in.

The first thing is obviously Tommy, who leads the Turbo Rangers for the first half of the series. Tommy is currently a big part of the Mighty Morphin series, and flashing forward in Turbo would give fans a connecting thread while simultaneously introducing a brand new cast.

The series also has a stellar villain, as Divatox is right up there with Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd as far as fan favorite villains go. You could even start from the movie as your base, but change some things up to allow Kimberly and Jason to have more impact on the series going forward.

The action sequences will also be much different, as the Rangers used their Turbo Zords a great deal throughout the show. The nature of combat would provide a nice visual change from Mighty Morphin as well.
