When Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca’s epic 25-issue run ended, many Star Wars fans were wondering what’s next for Darth Vader. The series, which began at the end of A New Hope, chronicled how Vader learned the identity of the X-Wing pilot who blew up the Death Star and dealing with the subsequent revelation that his son was alive.

It has since gotten a spiritual successor in the form of Gillen and Kev Walker’s Doctor Aphra, but the Dark Lord of the Sith seems to have been put back on the shelf. Not for long.

Marvel Comics announced a new series launching in June from Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli, starting with a brand new #1 in a storyline that could probably be referred to as Darth Vader: Year One.

From his transformation on Mustafar to storming the Tantive IV blockade runner, a lot happens to Darth Vader to make him into the monstrous menace that haunts the galaxy at the behest of his dark master, Darth Sidious.

Darth Vader #1 will explore those origins, beginning shortly after his fall at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi at the end of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

“I’m so excited that we get to tell more stories about the best villain of all timeโ€ฆand this time, we get to show his very first steps into the Dark Side,” said Jordan D. White, editor of Marvel’s Star Wars line of comics. “I was blown away by some of the stuff we plan to show in this seriesโ€ฆand I think readers will be, tooโ€”from hardcore Star Wars fanatics to those who want to see more of that deadly threat from the end of Rogue One. Charles has an evil streak in him that readers might have seen whenever he’s written Palpatine in the past. Now, that comes front and center.”

With a regular cover from Jim Cheung, Marvel’s new ongoing Darth Vader series begins this June. Be on the look out for solicitations soon!
