Creating an entire space fantasy universe out of thin air can be rewarding, but it also means having to come up with an abundance of jargon that characters are forced to say to help differentiate that universe from the one we know. Harrison Ford, who was forced to spout George Lucas‘ convoluted dialogue in Star Wars, continues to tease the filmmaker about just how difficult the “sh*t” was to say in a new GQ interview.
Ford has famously used the line “You can type this sh*t, but you can’t say it” in regards to Lucas’ approach to dialogue, most recently at Star Wars Celebration. “He sold the company for, you know, $4 billion. He doesn’t give a sh*t what I think,” Ford explained about if he may have offended the Star Wars creator.

“George usually sits near a monitor, far removed, so I had to convey my impressionโฆor my feelingsโฆabout the dialogue across a great space,” the actor recalled. “So I did shout it. ‘George! You can type this sh*t, but you sure can’t say it! Move your mouth when you’re typing!’ But it was a joke, at the time. A stress-relieving joke.”
Lucas has taken on a somewhat mythic image in the years since the first film debuted but, for those who have forgotten, Ford is actually older than the filmmaker.
“It made no difference whatsoever. I got no respect,” the actor said of his seniority on set.
After 30 years, Ford eventually returned to the world Lucas created by appearing in The Force Awakens, which would see the fatal end of Han Solo. Many would think this means the end of Ford’s appearances in the saga, but the answer is slightly more complicated.
“I mean, I’m finished with Star Wars if Star Wars is finished with me,” Ford pointed out. And, if Star Wars isn’t finished with him, Ford notes, “I can’t imagine it. But it is science fiction.”
