Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has officially become the second ranking Star Wars movie ever at the U.S. box office, after just three weeks in theaters. Rogue One hit $461 million plus in US theaters Friday, with an additional $383 million from foreign markets for a current total of $844.46 million worldwide. It officially opens in China today, though Friday’s preview showings pulled in just under $10 million in the world’s second largest market, which should spell a strong start for the film there.

In worldwide, Rogue One will move into a solid third place today, passing Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith ($848.8 mil total). After that, the next goal is $1 billion, but more specifically $1.028 billion, which would see it pass Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace for second place worldwide. Rogue One won’t, and was never expected to, carry anything close to Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ monstrous $2 billion haul, however.
Rogue One‘s $461 million in domestic box office is also number two overall for Lucasfilm as a production studio. Perhaps more impressively, however, Rogue One is now the #4 all-time for Disney’s Buena Vista distrobution in the U.S., passing Avengers: Age of Ultron and only sitting beneath Finding Dory, The Avengers, and The Force Awakens. It will most likely pass Finding Dory during its run, and sit there in third place overall for Disney. This also means the entire top five for the house of Mouse is represented by Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel Studios – all three were acquired under current CEO Bob Iger.
The Chinese weekend opening will largely determine the film’s international staying power, and how quickly it will reach $1 billion. With $500 million in sight for Rogue One in the states, it should soon become only the seventh movie in history to hit the milestone (and third for Disney).

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in theaters now. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it’s the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core “Skywalker Saga” of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: “Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.”
