After nearly two years of controversy surrounding toys modeled after Rey‘s likeness, Hasbro has finally realized the error of their ways in omitting the character from many of their products, moving forward with a Rey figure in a new Monopoly set available later this month.

The controversy began on “Force Friday” in 2015, a day where most of the merchandise to support The Force Awakens was released. Fans knew that Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, would play an integral role in the film and were incredibly disappointed to see how few toys were available that incorporated her. Fans took to social media to vent their frustrations using the hashtag “#WheresRey,” hoping that distributors would take note of the demand for products featuring the character.
When the film was released in December, fans were even more angry at the revelation that, of all the new characters in the film, Rey was probably the most important, which contradicted the lack of her representation. Specifically, a Star Wars-themed Monopoly set was released, which featured Finn instead of Rey, making the four playable characters all male. Of the various responses companies gave, one was that they didn’t want to reveal the importance of Rey’s character in the new film, which they thought an emphasis on products would make obvious.
As recent as earlier this month, Hasbro claimed it wouldn’t include a Rey figure due to “insufficient interest.” To support the fans, The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams shared the Hasbro customer service hotline through the Bad Robot Twitter, encouraging fans to call to express their sufficient interest.

Hasbro finally took notice of the issue and posted the updated set on their site, which will be available on July 25.
