How Long Is The Walking Dead Midseason Finale?

The Walking Dead has had its ups and downs in the first half of this new season, ‘Sing Me A Song’ definitely moved things in the right direction. The midseason finale, ‘Hearts Still Beating’, looks to compound on that success and send fans into the winter break wanting more.

While normal episodes of The Walking Dead clock in at exactly one hour – around 42 minutes if you don’t conut commercials – a number of this season’s entries have gone over.

The brutal season premiere was 90 minutes long, which gave fans more than enough time to digest the actions of Rick and Negan. Tara’s solo episode clocked in at 70 minutes, stretching just past the hour mark, and ‘Sing Me A Song’ was another 90-minute piece.

The season finale, ‘Hearts Still Beating’, will be the third 90-minute episode of this half-season.

Many may complain that the extended episodes don’t add much more, and are just an excuse to fit in more commercials. Yes, there are more advertisements, but they come with much more actual content as well.

The usual episode runs about 42-45 minutes – about 3/4 of the hour-long TV slot. When a 90-minute episode airs, there is a similar breakdown in the proportion of commercials shown. These episodes clock in at about 59-63 minutes, which is still about 3/4 of the slot.

Either way, audiences are still getting the same ratio of show-to-commercial that they normally would, there’s just more of both.
