Negan’s debut on the AMC series saw some of the most shocking and controversial moments fulfilled when he used his barbed wire wrapped baseball bat to bash the skulls of Abraham Ford and Glenn Rhee. It was a gory show of brutality as the landscape of The Walking Dead was flipped on its head. Two actors who had been with the series for a combined eighth years were suddenly no longer a part of the cast. Season 1’s Steven Yeun and Season 4’s Michael Cudlitz bowed out in the same episode.

It was one of the most shocking moments for fans of The Walking Dead, humbling for Rick Grimes and company, and life changing for the actors involved. However, as an actor on a show like The Walking Dead, the expectation of having the character you portray killed off on a moment’s notice is common.

For Michael Cudlitz, life has been fine after departing his job on The Walking Dead. In a recent interview with writer/creator Robert Kirkman (aka the guy really responsible for killing his character), Cudlitz opened up about life after The Walking Dead and Abraham’s final moments.

“It’s been good,” Cudlitz said. “Had a great time on the show.”

“Life after the show has been fantastic. Thank you again for the opportunity. Really did have a great time on the show. The time on the show was fun. The enthusiasm for the show and what it is, it is life changing. It’s been fantastic.”

Abraham’s Final Thoughts

Whenย the bat came down on Abraham’s head, he calmly embraced death with no other option. His girlfriend, ex-girlfriend, andย friends looked on in terror as his head was turned to mush by the show’sย newย villain but his finalย communication was a peace sign to Sasha.

Some might sayย Abraham went out likeย a hero. According to Cudlitz’sย description of Abraham’s finalย thoughts, Big Red would agree with those sentiments.

“He wasย praying that it would be him,” Cudlitzย said. “I think thatย at this point, in theย end of Season 6, Abrahamย knows he’s figured out theseย guys. He knows thatย this kind of operation to work theย way it is, for all of this men to be under his control theย way it is, he sees theย lay of theย land. He seesย whenย Neganย is describing whatย he hasย to do now, thatย someone hasย to pay for this, he knows thatย he wantsย it to be himย because he wantsย to protect everybodyย else. That’s just in his nature. Once he is chosen, I thinkย he is at peace.”

Then, there’s the twist on the comics which sawย onlyย Glenn killed in issueย #100 which Cudlitzย is also proud of.

“Everybody’s gonna think, ‘Oh, that’s horrible but at leastย Glennย safe!’” Cudlitzย said. And, then, boom! Glenn is not okay.
