While there were plenty of plot twists and cliffhangers in the midseason premiere of The Walking Dead, none were quite as intriguing as the fate of Father Gabriel.
The character spent most of the series as a coward, often opposing Rick’s leadership. However, over the last season or two, Gabriel as experienced a major face-turn. He’s been backing up Rick every chance he gets, and fans have really taken to his newly-discovered courage.
Last week, Gabriel mysteriously left Alexandria at the beginning of the episode. After frantically loading up a car with the town’s entire stock, Gabriel was seen speeding away with an unknown figure in his passenger seat.
The only clue fans – or the characters – were given, was a note from Gabriel that read, “Boat.” Outside of that, everyone spent the week wondering what had happened to the priest.
Finally, we have our answer.
After Rick confronts the new community in the junkyard, they reveal that they are the ones who took Gabriel. They saw him standing watch, and they forced him to gather up all of the community’s supplies, and leave town.
The note helped lead Rick to Gabriel’s location, and it turns out that he has been safe the entire time. They might have to barter to get Gabe back, but he made a clutch decision in leaving a paper trail.
