A world filled with zombies provides horrifying moments at every turn, naturally. Whether it’s someone’s eye popping out of their skull, their face being ripped off by zombies, or a head being smashed by the trunk of a car, The Walking Dead does not shy away from cover-your-eyes-but-still-look moments.
Let’s take a look at the grossest moments The Walking Dead has offered through its first seven seasons…
The Turtle Club
Surviving in the world of The Walking Dead is difficult. Not only do you have to deal with threats from both the living and undead,ย but just finding sufficient resources to keep the body functioning is a challenge.
For Enid, the loss of her parents sent her on the road solo, but she quickly adapted to the apocalyptic setting. While Rick Grimes’ group refused to eat dog food early on in the apocalypse, Enid was ready to eat anything she could get her hands on.
In one scene, Enid ripped a turtle to shreds and chewed on its inside in true zombie fashion just to survive. But, hey, she is the one who is always willing to “Just Survive Somehow”, as revealed in thatย episode.ย
Eye See You
No surprise here, but Glenn’s death certainly makes the cut of The Walking Dead‘sย grossest moments.ย
The former pizza boy had became a hardened survivor while maintaining his moral code throughout the show. He would become a husband and was on the path to becoming a father when Negan’s brutal introduction cut him down.
The new villain in town bashed Glenn’s skull with a baseball bat, which is gross enough in itself, but he proceeded to trot around in front of Glenn’s friends and family as the character struggled to breathe or make words. His eye literally popped out of his skull, and in Negan’sย words, it was “gross as s—!” in the Season Seven premiere titled “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be.”
It was one of the most brutal deaths of the entire series, but it mightย not have been the ugliest.
Well, Well, Well
The second season of The Walking Dead introduced a moment many fans still don’t understand.
Somewhere on Hershel’s farm, a walker had stumbled into a well and become bloated as water filled his body. Instead of abandoning this water which had to have been filled with the zombie virus, the group elected to send Glenn into the well in an effort to pull this thing from it.
Just as it looked like the group had found success and was pulling the bloated walker from itsย eternal stumbling through the water, the walker split in half and its guts poured out, both onto the ground and back into the well.
Of course, the zombie’s upper half was still alive, so T-Dog beat its face in as a bonus gross factor which even Maggie Greene couldn’t handle at the time in the “Cherokee Rose” episode. ย
Dirty Sewage
Speaking of Maggie Greene, the character would emerge as a leader on the series and learn to take on intense threats in her survival efforts.
One of those threats was a walker in the sewer. This thing had spent so much time underground, it basically became a part of the sewage system. It was weakened by the water and covered in an algae-type substance. When Maggie tried to push it away from her, her hands broke through its flesh and she had to literally kill it from the inside.ย
The walker was not only a scary encounter for Maggie and her fans, but one of the moments which reminded audiences and characters just how gross this world can be in the “Now” episode.
No, No, Noah
Though Glenn’s death is often billed as the most brutal and gross of the series, Noah’s might actually take the cake.
The revolving door scene remains one of the most unforgettable moments on The Walking Dead and has a clear edge of Rick’s snot bubble to make the list of top five gross moments. Poor, Noah. The character was finallyย ready to become an integral part of the Alexandrian community, but Nicholas’ cowardice in that revolving door cost him his life, and walkers pulled him into their horde.
Not only did Noah get eaten to death… The zombies started with his faceย to tear him apart, jawbone first, in the “Spend” episode.
