McBride has been in the acting game since the 1990s but found major success as Carol Pelettier on The Walking Dead when she joined the AMC series in 2010. As a main cast member on AMC’s adaptation of the popular comic book since its first season, McBride’s Carol has survived the zombie apocalypse (so far) with Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, and a few others. Her character will figure prominently into the upcoming seventh season of the hit show.

Outside of Robert Kirkman’s zombie world, McBride has starred in the thriller The Mist and the popular network drama Dawson’s Creek.

Born in Lexington, Kentucky, McBride turns 52 years old today. Happy Birthday, Melissa McBride. Hope it doesn’t bite!

To honor McBride’s birthday, we’re running through a few of Carol’s most epic moments within the world of The Walking Dead. The actress has played such a beloved character, starting as a humbled and abused housewife and evolving into an unstoppable hero, ready to die for the people she loves.

Terminus

The best momentย of Carol’s post-apocalyptic careerย came whenย she rescuedย Rick’s group from the cannibals of Terminus.

Theย groupย had arrived at theย location seekingย a Sanctuaryย promised by signs posted along train tracks for miles. However, upon arrival, they were shuffled into a trainย car and heldย as livestockย for theย people of Terminusย to harvest and eat.

Theย only person who wasn’t caught wasย Carol. She hadย been banished by Rickย a seasonย earlierย for killingย twoย peopleย in theย prison but wasn’t holding it against him. With a machineย gun and some fireworks, Carolย managedย to singlehandedlyย freeย her friends and help theย groupย escape. All theย while, she wasย covered in zombie guts to blend in with theย dead.

Carol’sย attack on Terminusย made for one of theย most beloved episodes of Theย Walking Dead.

The Flourist

Though Carolย certainlyย wouldn’tย consider this a highlight, the difficult moments which saw her eliminating Lizzie from the equationย was unforgettable.

Little girl Lizzieย was out of control. She wanted to prove thatย zombies are not a threat andย shouldn’t be killed. To do so, sheย killedย her ownย sister Mikaย in an effort to seeย her reanimate. This was finally the breaking point forย Carol.

While Tyreseย waited in a nearbyย cabin, Carolย walked Lizzieย outย into a field where sheย intructedย her to “Look at the flowers.” While Lizzieย may or mayย not haveย known what was coming, Carolย pulled the trigger on her pistol andย shot Lizzieย in the back of the head.

The Wolves

Like Terminus, Carol more or lessย saved the day again when the Wolves attackedย the Alexandriaย Safe-Zone.

In the midst of chaos, as defenselessย Alexandriansย were beingย slaughtered left and right, Carol took outย one of the enemies andย had the brainsย to take on theirย outfit. Blending in as one of the Wolves, Carol ranย around the Safe-Zone andย killed the Wolvesย as they had no idea what was coming.ย

This all cameย during the time when Morganย was operating under the “all life is precious” cree andย notย killing the threatย which was immediately in front of his face — making Carol’sย heroics that much more valuable.ย

Savior Roast

Few things areย better than a barbecue.

Carol hosted a barbecue of her ownย when she roasted an impressive number of Negan’sย Savior on their ownย territory. As Maggie andย Carolย made their escape fromย captivityย underย theย Saviorsย priorย to Negan’sย introduction, Maggie insisted that theyย killedย every last one of them.

The two women lured a batch of Savior soldiers into a holdingย area which was lined with gasoline andย Carolย sparked theย flame andย trapped their enemies inside. It was a brutalย slaying of theย bad guys butย not theย first timeย Carolย burned bodies for theย greater good.ย

Cherokee Rose

While this moment isn’tย exactly of Carol’sย doing, it is one of the more touching and memorableย sequences the character was directly involvedย with.

During Theย Walking Dead‘s second season, the show wasย heavilyย focused on searching for Carol’sย missing daughterย Sophia. While Carol appeared to be losing hope, a surprisingย character emerged as an enormous help and uplifting spirit for the recent widow.

Darylย Dixon searched for Sophia endlessly, becomingย veryย close to Carol in the process. When Carol’sย hopes were down, he offered her a veryย specific flowerย which he had found during his search: a Cherokee Rose. It wasย a sign of hopeย with a story tied back to Nativeย Americans whoย wereย searchingย for their ownย children and launched the Carol/Darylย relationship fans haveย grown to love so much.
