In their meetings with the Kingdom, Jared’s group has been reluctant to show any sympathy for the survivors hailing from Ezekiel’s community. However, when Benjamin died, that changed.
First of all, Gavin, the apparent leader of this batch of Saviors, sent Jared packing for his actions. It was clear that Gavin was furious with Jared for shooting Benjamin rather than Richard. The reason why he was furious is more interesting. Jared shot an innocent kid who never really bothered or posed a threat to the Saviors. Sure, he took Jared out using his teachings from Morgan, but Gavin understands that Jared was getting what he deserved.

Upon learning of Benjamin’s death at the Saviors and Kingdom’s second meeting in Sunday’s Bury Me Here episode, Gavin showed something few Saviors have: remorse.
It turns out, the Saviors can think for themselves, after all. At least, some of them can. While the jerks like Jared, David and Simon appear to find some sort of twisted joy in tormenting the communities which the Saviors endlessly bully, guys like Gavin and Fat Joey appear to be doing nothing more than following orders. Toss Dwight into the mix and you might have enough of a collective conscience to turn against the leader.
In The Walking Dead comics, Negan‘s downfall stems from Dwight’s betrayal. He reveals himself as an inside man to the Kingdom just as the war between the communities and the Saviors begins in Robert Kirkman’s source material. Many fans are expecting to see Dwight switch sides, something Austin Amelio himself is rooting for, but the AMC series may very well set up another character for the flip or add more to the bunch.
Furthermore, The Walking Dead comics saw Dr. Carson offering Eugene an escape from the Sanctuary. He takes it and the pair of character hightail it to Alexandria. Now that Negan has killed his Dr. Carson, someone else will have to offer freedom to Eugene if that moment is going to be realized on television.
Having a conscience is a major weakness for the Saviors. If some of their men and women start to see what Negan is doing and how cruel he is, with Rick offering a better way of life, there might be a few new Tara Chambler’s in town. Back ins Season 4, Tara learned of the Governor’s real ways and saw the community Rick was trying to build and has become a valuable member of the community since the Governor was dealt with.
For now, these soldiers are simply following orders to survive. If they see another option for survival, they will likely jump on it.
