WARNING: Major Spoilers Ahead For The Walking Dead Midseason Finale.

While The Walking Dead‘s midseason finale brought some more insight to the questions in the heads of fans – like who gave Daryl the motorcycle key – the episode created the biggest mystery of the entire season.

Who was watching Rick and the others?

When Rick and Aaron were leaving the pond, a pair of boots was seen walking up to the edge of the water. It was clear that someone was watching them, and the same figure appeared after the episode’s credits.

Father Gabriel was watching over Alexandria, and the person was watching the community through binoculars. When they jumped down from their post, the figure was seen wearing the same pair of boots.

There are a ton of theories surrounding who this person could possibly be. Some think that it’s Dwight watching Rick, finding the right time to announce he’s turning on Negan. Other fans believe that The Whisperers are finally coming around.

Whoever it is, Robert Kirkman has stated that they will have a major impact on the second half of the season.

While on Talking Dead this week, The Walking Dead creator was asked by Chris Hardwick about the mystery person. While he didn’t reveal the identity of the watcher, he did say that it wouldn’t be long before fans found out who it was.

“I really wish I could tell you. All I can say is, those boots, you definitely recognize those from earlier, they’re connected to that boat scene. That’s a big part of what we’re dealing with when we come back next half of the season. So we’ll be, ya know, revealing that soon.”

Odds are, this mystery person is part of an entirely new group to the show. The comics don’t have a new group that could enter at this stage, so there’s no telling what could be going on.
