First capturing the essence of the comic characters, and then taking over the characters of the show, McFarlane Toys has continued to make the best-looking, and most well-respected action figures from The Walking Dead.
The company was founded by comic artist and writer Todd McFarlane, who created Spawn and is now the president of Image Comics, and has taken special care of the company’s tentpole property. Fans have collected the popular figures since they were first released, and 2016 will see an all-new line of figures hit the shelves.
Series 5 of The Walking Dead figures was announced earlier this year, and the final images were released this week, in preparation of the products hitting the shelves.
This series is based on the characters from the comics, not the versions seen on the TV series, and is blending characters from early issues, as well as the recent comic run. Series 5 consists of four figures, but each one comes with a couple of bonuses.
Just a warning, there will be major spoilers to The Walking Dead comics throughout the rest of this article.
Shane will be one of the featured figures with this series, even though he hasn’t appeared in the comics since issue #6. After John Bernthal’s take on the character on The Walking Dead, the character become a cult icon among fans. In this edition, his figure will done the popular sheriff’s jacket, and comes with a zombie version of Shane’s head.
Shane’s zombie-face was seen in the comics after Rick realized everyone who died was infected, and he went back to the campsite to dig up Shane’s body.
Glenn’s figure in this series comes with multiple looks as well. He can be seen standing up, extremely healthy, or with a bludgeoned face, courtesy of Negan in issue #100. It’s sad to see a version of Glenn’s figure in corpse-form, but the moment stood out as one of the most memorable for comic fans. It’s certainly one to be remembered.
Speaking of Negan, his alternate look from the comics is getting a figure in this series.
After Negan was imprisoned by Rick, following the All Out War storyline, his style was changed over the course of a couple of years. During the time-jump, Negan’s hair and beard grew to be as long, if not longer, than Jesus’. This figure features the villain in his jumpsuit, donning the hair and beard.
Finally, Series 5 is bringing us the first figure of Lydia, Carl’s love interest in the newer issues of the series.
Lydia is the daughter of Alpha, leader of The Whisperers, and her relationship with Carl is what really kicks off the Whisper War. She comes in her normal form, but with an alternate head that features the masks she wore when walking with The Whisperers.
In addition to all of the figures in Series 5 getting extra pieces, they all come with the ceremonial head on a pike of a character slain by Alpha.
In order to send Rick a message, Alpha kidnapped twelve residents of the connected communities, and left their heads on pikes for Rick to find, marking the border between their lands. Among them were central characters Rosita, Olivia, and Ezekiel.
By the looks of things, it looks like you will need to by the Lydia figure in order to get the head of Ezekiel.
There hasn’t been any official word on when these toys will be available for purchase, but The Walking Dead season seven premiere is coming up, so that might be a clue.
In the meantime, you can check McFarlane Toys for updates, as well as other figure series for sale.
