Heading into tonight’s season seven finale, many fans believe that The Walking Dead will finally begin the important ‘All Out War’ storyline from the comics. With Rick preparing for a conflict, and Negan seemingly taking the battle to him, both sides have set up for this story.

So, how exactly did the war begin in the comics? Well, when you look at it, it was a very similar tale to the one fans of the show have been witnessing over the course of the last year or so.

In the comics, Negan stopped Rick and the others on the road, just as he did on the show. He lined the group up, put them on their knees, and murdered Glenn in front of his entire family.

This is the moment when the show and the comic differed quite a bit. On the show, as you probably remember, Rick was completely broken. He bowed to Negan’s wishes and tried to prove to his entire community that he was going to obey the villain’s commands. In the comics, Rick did no such thing. He may have given some food and weapons to Negan, but he had a plan for revenge the entire time.

Not long after Negan made his first collection visit to Alexandria, Jesus took Rick and a few others to meet Ezekiel. The Kingdom’s leader wanted to go to war, and tried to convince Rick it was a good idea.

During the time at The Kingdom, Ezekiel revealed that Dwight was working with him as a mole. They were planning on taking Negan from the inside, and Rick finally got on board.

The groups came together for an assault on all of Negan’s outposts, and that went horribly wrong. They failed, and Negan fought back by attacking Alexandria.

This is where the show is crossing over with the comics. The first battle at Alexandria is where the war really kicked off. Negan threw grenades into the gates, he started attacking from all directions, and it was up to Rick to lead his people to an early victory.

Hopefully, tonight’s episode will be a mirror-image of that very issue.
