As awful as the deaths of Glenn and Abraham were on the latest episode of The Walking Dead, they both used their last words to truly capture the history and essence of their respective characters.

Abraham was killed first and, after being hit once with Lucille, he found a way to respond to Negan’s attempted murder. Abe stared his killer in the eyes and said, “Suck my nuts.”

This was the most Abraham response he could have given, and it was nice to know the character went on in a similar tone to that with which he entered.

When Glenn was killed, he had some final words as well. While these were much more intimate words than Abraham’s, they still held very true to the character’s identity.

As his head was brutally bashed in, and an eye was starting to fall out, Glenn turned and uttered his last words to his wife.

“Maggie, I’ll find you.”

The couple’s history has had a lot of spiritual ties and references, so it seems like Glenn was mentioning some kind of afterlife. In a recent Q&A, however, Steven Yeun reveals a much deeper cut than that. Check it out:

“I think Glenn was fighting to find words and ‘Maggie, I’ll find you’ was a callback to another experience and another time when he really was trying to find her. Maybe it was a subconscious thought or maybe something he held onto for a while that was his driving force, and when he got smashed in the head, it just brought it to the forefront. There are so many ways to look at it.”

When Maggie and Glenn were separated in season four, Glenn made this proclamation multiple times. He vowed not to give up until he was reunited with Maggie, and “I’ll find you” became his words to live by.

This quote made his death exponentially more dramatic than it already was, and gave fans the heartbreak they had so desperately been trying to avoid.
