The Walking Dead’s Five Worst Characters

Seven full years into The Walking Dead and the AMC series has manage to create characters who fall on two sides of a very diverse and wide spectrum.

Some characters on the show have become beloved by millions of viewers on a global scale. Some characters fans love to hate on a weekly basis but secretly want them to continue surviving the zombie apocalypse. There are even some who people couldn’t possibly feel more neutrally about, even after they suddenly go missing (looking at you, Heath). Others, however, are universally despised for any number of reasons.

Through 99 episodes of walker drama, a few too many characters have fallen into the fourth category.

Whether the AMC series took too much time to focus on a subplot while other more interesting events were taking place elsewhere, the characters made boneheaded decisions which got themselves or others killed, or the roles were just plain annoying, there are enough characters on The Walking Dead who are hated by millions of fans to comprise a list of the five worst.

Now, these aren’t the characters who are hated because they’re supposed to be hated which is how Negan dodged an appearance here. These are the characters who are sometimes hated for even having been a part of the show at one point.

Andrea

Poor, Andrea.

The character was destined to have one of the more glorious plotlines if the AMC series had followed Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comics. There’s even a moment in Season 3 which saw the character so close to finding redemption and becoming the awesome co-leader of Alexandria but is ultimately snatched back into the woods by the Governor and put on a path towards her death.

What happened to Andrea was unfortunate. The character made foolish decisions and followed the manipulative Governor when every other character who got as close to him could see through his villainy. Newcomer at the time Michonne certainly wasn’t having it but Andrea was too stubborn to go back to her friends who fled the burning prison and left her behind a season earlier. 

The unfortunate writing of Laurie Holden’s character cost the actress her job at the show despite being promised that Andrea would end up with Rick in the end.

Beth

Some people love Beth but it seems like most of that affection is a tribute to Emily Kinney as an actress rather than the role she played.

For most of her time on The Walking Dead, Beth served as little more than a nuisance to many of the characters. Her breaking into song sometimes stalled episodes for an often impatient fanbase. She insisted she could defend herself but never did anything to prove it. Ultimately, the character was kidnapped after an episode which sort of introduced a relationship between her and Daryl and revealed a bit more of her fun side. Otherwise, she just always seemed to be kind of mad at everyone!

Making things worse, when Beth finally earned some heroic moments, they came during the Slabtown hospital batch of episodes, one of the worst storylines on the series, and ended with a bullet in her head, preventing any more development for the character just when she had finally became interesting. 

Don’t bother making the argument that Beth was unforgettable. Her own sister forgot about her. 

Natania

Natania has been around for less than one whole season but The Walking Dead fans already hate her.

The character serves as the leader of Oceanside but is mostly just an obstacle for Rick Grimes. Her and her group were heavily armed and skilled when it comes to dispatching threats. Still, instead of so much as considering joining Rick’s fight against the man who killed all of their men and his army, Natania shut down the notion without hesitation. 

Why, Natania? Why?

This is the zombie apocalypse! Just ask Jessie Anderson — if you don’t fight, you die! It’s a miracle Jessie’s kids didn’t make this list simply for not understanding that rule, but they’re kids! Natania needs to either relinquish her position as the leader of Oceanside or start making decisions which will protect the greater good in the long run.

Nicholas

Now, Nicholas may be an exception to this list. He was hated by fans but it’s a credit to Michael Traynor’s portrayal and the writing job behind him. We were supposed to hate him.

However, the hate for Nicholas was almost unheard of. He was a supporting character who had a feud with another supporting character. His cowardice cost Noah his life in brutal fashion and almost resulted in him killing Glenn, twice over. If only he could have made up his mind on whether he wanted to grow into a survivor or remain scared of everything!

The hate for Nicholas was unmatched, though his actor Michael Traynor has certainly earned the love and respect of fans since, as they can look back and appreciate his portrayal. The dumpstergate saga tranformed into fans flipping out over the fake death of Glenn which came just a few months before Negan could a character whose identity wouldn’t be revealed until the following season’s premiere.

In defense of Nicholas, it wasn’t fault that we didn’t see Glenn crawl under the dumpster. Still, he’s a coward and we hate him.

Dawn

Dawn. What is there to say about Dawn?

The leader of the hospital in Atlanta ruled with some sort of manipulative, enslaving style which next to no one enjoyed watching. She had little reasoning behind her methods. She was cruel to people when she could have rallied a community in the hospital. At the time, The Walking Dead fans were ready to move on, but the story chose to circle around this arc which ended up having the same payoff as if the characters had simply head up to Terminus earlier than planned. 

Plus, she killed Beth right when she was finally getting interesting.

As the centerpiece of The Walking Dead‘s most irredeemable storyline, Dawn wins the coveted award of “Worst Character” on The Walking Dead.
