Here’s Why The Walking Dead’s Zombie Virus Will Never Be Explained Or Cured

By now, both Walking Dead series on AMC have dabbled with slight explanations for the causes and effects of the zombie virus.

On The Walking Dead, the CDC-centric TS-19 episode saw Dr. Edwin Jenner explaining how the virus changes the human brain and turns the body into a monster which only wishes to eat with no thoughts or memories. On Fear the Walking Dead, the government and civilization collapses were put on display, with a man in space recently confirming the entire world has fallen to the virus.

Those might be as close as we’re going to get when it comes to understanding the virus, where it comes from, or how to cure it. During a panel a San Diego Comic Con, the series creator and writer Robert Kirkman ruled out any explanation coming to the series.

“When we get questions like these [about a cure], we like to not be as definitive as possible because we don’t want to reveal anything,” Kirkman said. “But the answers are ‘no’ and ‘no’.”

There are two reasons for steering clear of such storylines according to Kirkman. “One, because it’s been done on a lot of other zombie stories. And two, because you know it’s kind of a mythology-breaking proposition,” the writer said. “You don’t want that kind of thing as far as somebody being immune. And we have dabbled in that a little bit in the other show [Fear The Walking Dead].”

“But as far as actually trying to solve the thing, I’ve always thought that one of the best things about this show is that it’s not about scientists and it’s not about people that would take that on as a task – because I feel like that’s unrelatable,” Kirkman said. “I think if there were a zombie apocalypse, I don’t know that there’s maybe five people in this room that would have that job.”

“To go off and try to solve this would be a boring show, so definitely not,” Kirkman concluded.
