Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead was a doozy. Father Gabriel got Negan to make a confession, revealing some of the villain’s mysterious backstory. Rick and Daryl got into a moral disagreement that boiled over into a fist fight. The Saviors are aware there’s a mole in Negan’s ranks. Eugene continued to prove his loyalty to Team Negan. In a big twist, Rick spotted a helicopter fly overhead. And last but not least, Father Gabriel’s life continues to hang in the balance as the end of the episode sees an imprisoned Gabriel seemingly very sick and possibly suffering from some kind of fever.

As promised by Negan actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, The Walking Dead season 8 finally explored some of Negan’s backstory: not only did he work with kids, he had a wife he loved dearly.ย

The Rick and Daryl fight is already causing a split with fans: some see it as a brotherly quarrel, as brothers tend to do, and others called the brief sparring match out as being “out of character.”ย

“I very likely will die,” Father Gabriel says, in a flashback to his old church Team Family abandoned back in season 5. “I’m not asking to live. You’ve given me redemption. And it’s that which makes me no longer fear death. What I fearโ€ฆ is a fruitless death. All I ask for, after you have given me so much, is purpose.”

Father Gabriel was trapped in a trailer with Negan, only managing to escape by pulling the old guts trick: Neganย bashed a walker to pieces, with theย uneasy alliance slathering themselves in walker blood and guts to act as camouflage, making them invisible to the flood of flesh-eating monsters outside.ย 

Having successfully made it back into the Sanctuary, Neganย ordered his men to take Gabriel to a room โ€” gently โ€” telling the man of faith he’s going to put him to work. Eugene visits Gabriel’s room, only to find Gaby shivering, sweating and delirious. Between Gabriel’s talks about a purposeful death and his illness inย captivity with the Saviors, things aren’t looking good for the padre.ย ย  ย 

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
