Jenna Coleman is reportedly in talks with the BBC to reprise her role as Clara “The Impossible Girl” Oswald for the Doctor Who Christmas Special. The potential return would allow Clara to witness the regeneration Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor, the Doctor she spent two seasons adventuring before leaving the show at the end of its ninth season.
Doctor Who has a habit of bringing back a Doctor’s most significant companion for cameo roles to help bid farewell during a regeneration episode. Clara’s appearance would be similar to those past returns, according to the rumor.
In The End of Time, David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor pays a quick visit to Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler in the year 2005, shortly before she meets the Doctor for the first time. In “The Time of the Doctor,” Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor sees a vision of Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond while undergoing the regeneration process.
Clara was last seen zipping off into space with Ashildr (Maisie Williams) in a stolen TARDIS. This was after the Doctor put Clara’s seemingly inevitable death on hold by stealing her out of the moment just before she dies.
The fate of the Doctor’s most recent companion, Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), was placed into her own hands in the Doctor Who Season 10 finale episode “The Doctor Falls.” Whether she’ll return for the Christmas Special or beyond remains unknown.
Peter Capaldi took over as The Doctor in Season 8, after Matt Smith’s departure. After three seasons, he will depart the show alongside showrunner Steven Moffat, who has steered the series since Season 5. Moffat was a breakout writer during the Russell T. Davies seasons of Doctor Who.
Moffat will be handing the reins over to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall for Doctor Who Season 11. Chibnall is a longtime Doctor Who fans who also wrote for the series during the Russell T. Davies era and was head writer on the Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood.
Doctor Who Season 10 also introduced Pearl Mackie as the new companion, Bill Potts, replacing the previous companion, Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald, who left after Season 9. Whether she will join the new Doctor in Doctor Who Season 11 is still unknown
The Doctor Who Season 10 finale airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET on BBC America.
