Fans of Futurama will be getting an all-new adventure starring all of your favorite characters, but coming to you in a whole new way. USA Today revealed that the original cast are reuniting to tell a 42-minute tale in the form of a radio drama, which debuts September 14 on Soundcloud and Nerdist.

The project, called “Radiorama,” will go a meta route, with USA Today explaining that the “podcast will also feature characters including Fry (Billy West’s ’90s pizza guy), Leela (Katey Sagal’s one-eyed ship captain), and an appropriately-meta adversary: Klaxxon (Chris Hardwick), a nefarious life form composed entirely of soundwaves from 21st-century podcasts.”
While there’s no news of a new episode or movie on the way, with the last new episode having debuted in 2013, this upcoming radio drama confirms reports from earlier this summer about a new project.
“There are no new TV episodes or movies in the pipeline at the momentโฆ.” Futurama executive producer David X. Cohen broke to fans in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session. “HOWEVER, here and now I promise a different avenue of exciting Futurama news later this summer, no kidding. Keep your expectations modest and you will be pleased, possibly. I am not allowed to say more or I will be lightly phasered.”
Futurama fans had to confront one of their worst fears when Netflix suddenly removed many episodes from its service. Despite it being a stressful few weeks for Futurama fans, Hulu stepped in to save the day, announcing that they would make all episodes of the series available on their service.
Additionally, fans were treated to another incarnation of the popular series earlier this summer when the mobile game Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow hit the mobile market.
“I’m proud to say that Futurama lives! In mobile-video-game teaser trailer form, anyway,” creator Matt Groening said of the game. “If you squint, it’s kind of like a little episode!”
“Working on this new Futurama animation has been a thrilling adventure,” Cohen said. “I finally understand how Neil Armstrong must have felt when he first landed on the lunar surface, watched some funny cartoons on the control screen, and did whatever else was on his schedule that day.”
Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow is available now.
