The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has always mastered the art of long-term storytelling by weaving together individual pieces that come together in epic crossover events. From the earth-shattering arrival of Thanos to the Multiverse-spanning chaos of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU thrives on bringing heroes from different walks of lives and parts of the world together. While the focus has largely shifted towards cosmic threats and multiversal incursions, it’s possible that the next major crossover event is brewing much closer to home, hidden in plain sight within the street-level heroes of New York City.

The pieces are slowly but surely falling into place, hinting at a grand reunion of characters we once believed to be permanently sidelined. With the reintroduction of key figures and subtle nods to Marvel’s Netflix era, it’s becoming clear that the MCU is preparing to resurrect a beloved team, and it’s far more intentional than many realize. The signs are there for those willing to look, pointing directly to the triumphant return of The Defenders.
Daredevil Isn’t the Only Defender Back in Town

The Matt Murdock/Daredevil’s first official introduction into the MCU in Spider-Man: No Way Home and his expanded role in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, fans of the Netflix Marvel shows held their breath for news of a new Daredevil series. The successful of Netflix’s Daredevil extended beyond just the fans, garnering critical acclaim and making it one of the most popular installments of the MCU’s television side. Seeing Charlie Cox’s Daredevil in the MCU was a highlight for many, and with the announcement of Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel delivered on a long-awaited return.
Daredevil’s return, while huge for the larger MCU, isn’t an isolated choice. More recently, the news that Krysten Ritter is slated to return as Jessica Jones in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is the most crucial puzzle piece yet. This isn’t just a rumor; it’s a concrete development confirmed by Marvel that blows the doors wide open for a full Defenders reunion. Jessica Jones was a fan favorite for her no-nonsense attitude, super-strength, and the careful, yet very real depicition, of her personal struggles with trauma. Her dynamic with Matt Murdock in the original Defenders series was filled with banter and undeniable chemistry, and their upcoming reunion in the MCU signals a much larger plan.
This isn’t simply about bringing back popular characters for nostalgia; it’s about re-establishing the street-level infrastructure of the MCU and setting the stage for bigger things. The fact that two of the four core Defenders are now confirmed to be active within the MCU framework is undeniable evidence that a larger strategy is at play. Similiarly, Frank Castle/The Punisher has recently been confirmed to appear in the next installment of Spider-Man: Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The integration of the street-level heroes (or anti-heroes like Castle) into films for the first time backs up the theory that Marvel has way larger plans at play. Daredevil’s initial return might have felt like a deliberate choice to bring back the most popular and successful of Marvel’s Netflix heroes, but Jessica’s confirmed re-entry transforms it into a very intentional pattern.
The Gang is Almost Back Together Again

With Daredevil firmly back in the fold and Jessica Jones officially on her way, the question naturally turns to the remaining members of the original Defenders: Luke Cage and Danny Rand (Iron Fist). For a long time, the notion of seeing these heroes teaming up again seemed like an impossibility, especially given the varying critical receptions of their individual Netflix series. However, years later, Disney+ changed the game, fundamentally shifting the landscape. Jessica Jones’ re-introducition in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 makes the possibility of Luke and Danny joining their old friends not only likely, but highly probable, and even necessary for the overarching narrative the MCU seems to be building for their street-level heroes.
Luke Cage and Jessica Jones already have an existing relationship, both romantically and professionally, in the comics and in the Netflix Marvel world. Their “will they/won’t they” dynamic was a cornerstone of their respective series, and it would feel incomplete to bring one back without the other, especially given the decades worth of source material from the comics that could dig into their shared past and their future as a married couple with a child.
Similarly, the “Heroes for Hire” partnership between Luke Cage and Iron Fist is iconic in the comics and was a highlight of their team-up in the original shows. While Finn Jones’ portrayal of Danny Rand was met with mixed reviews, the second season of Iron Fist was not only a treat for fans, but set up Colleen Wing as the new Iron Fist and Danny Rand on a possible journey to discover the history behind previous Iron Fists and the mystical K’un-Lun. A soft reboot for both Luke and Danny or a more streamlined integration into the MCU with both Matt and Jessica already established and working as vigilantes, could easily address past criticisms and lead to fantastic storytelling.
The recent announcement that Mike Colter (Luke Cage) will be a guest at New York Comic Con alongside Charlie Cox (Daredevil) and Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones) is another significant clue. While a convention appearance is certainly not a direct confirmation of a MCU return, it strongly suggests that Marvel is gauging fan interest and perhaps even gearing up for a surprise announcment at NYCC.
With two Defenders confirmed and a strong hint for a third, the idea of an isolated return for any one of them becomes less likely. Instead, it points towards a grander vision: the complete reassembly of the Defenders. This reunion wouldn’t just be a nostalgic trip; it would offer a grounded, street-level counterpoint to the cosmic and multiversal threats currently dominating MCU in films, providing a much-needed sense of realism and personal stakes. The Defenders highlighted the chemistry between all four vigilantes in a new and exciting way. Now, the stage is being set for a new era of street-level heroism, and the Defenders are poised to lead the charge.
