No matter what sandbox James Gunn is playing in, he’s going to bring humor to the proceedings. Nearly every character in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise knows how to get a laugh, even Groot, whose vocabulary includes only four words. Moving to DC doesn’t change anything for Gunn. In fact, the humor gets turned up a notch in his first movie for the company, The Suicide Squad, which relies on putting its characters in absolutely ridiculous situations. Now that Gunn is the head of DC Studios, though, he has more freedom and can mold the DC Universe into anything he wants.

The filmmaker’s first move, of course, was to bring Superman back to the big screen. Based on the box office numbers and reception from fans and critics, that was a smart decision, as everyone is waiting for Supergirl with bated breath. However, before the Girl of Steel can take to the skies, there are fish to fry on the small screen. Peacemaker Season 2 is aiming for the title of “best DCU project” and making a character with no comic book history one of its most important figures.
Langston Fleury Makes Quite an Entrance in Peacemaker Season 2

Christopher Smith gets on the government’s good side at the end of Peacemaker Season 1. With a Butterfly invasion imminent, he takes out the Cow and saves the world before the Justice Gang even shows up. Chris’ plan after that is to turn over a new leaf and become a hero. However, Rick Flag Sr., who knows Peacemaker is responsible for his son’s death, isn’t going to let that happen. He tasks John Economos with monitoring his old friend, having him set up shop right outside Auggie Smith’s old house. Economos clearly has reservations about spying, though, so Flag Sr.’s subordinate, Sasha Bordeaux, sends someone to watch the watcher. Langston Fleury, played by comedy legend Tim Meadows, arrives on the scene, and almost immediately, he starts throwing hilarious haymakers at Economos, giving him a funny nickname and making fun of the other 11th Street Kids.
Unlike the other A.R.G.U.S. agents, who all appear in the pages of DC Comics, Fleury is a Gunn original that’s tasked with bringing levity to Peacemaker‘s more serious second season. Where the character really gets to shine is when he discusses his “bird blindness” with Economos. Apparently, Fleury can’t tell the difference between different types of birds, as he believes Eagly is a duck. The whole thing seems to be a bit at first, but when Fleury enters Pecaemaker’s house and can’t shoot Eagly because he can’t figure out how big he is, the vibe changes. Fortunately, Fleury survives his encounter with Peacemaker’s pet because there are a couple of other characters he needs to interact with before he meets his maker.
Superman‘s Jimmy Olsen and Guy Gardner Have Some Serious Competition

As much as Gunn may want to make Superman a quip machine like the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Star-Lord, he knows he can’t. That means the humor in Superman has to come from other characters. While Krypto gets a few laughs by breaking stuff he shouldn’t, Jimmy Olsen and Guy Gardner do a lot of the heavy lifting. In Jimmy’s case, he can’t help but be funny because all of the women in Metropolis are fawning over him. His superpower really pays off when Eve Teschmacher has a spat with her boyfriend, Lex Luthor, and wants to bring him down. However, Jimmy has to weigh all of his options because taking the deal she’s offering means spending a whole weekend with someone he finds repulsive. He does the right thing, though, which opens the door for Guy to flex his comedic chops.
Throughout all of Superman, Guy asks like he’s the big man on campus, despite the Man of Steel being within earshot. The Green Lantern’s blind confidence leads to some hilarious moments, including when he argues with Lois Lane about his haircut. Superman‘s final moments also let Guy shine, as he only accepts Metamorpho into the Justice Gang after the new hero agrees that the team’s name is cool. While Fleury probably isn’t going to be on Maxwell Lord’s recruitment list, Guy should still seek him out because magic is bound to happen with those two in a room together.
Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
