The MCU’s Thanos-Killing Weapon Has Kind of A Terrible Success Rate

Marvel Studios Animation’s upcoming Marvel Zombies series will continue the awful success rate of one of the only weapons capable of killing Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Throughout the Infinity Saga, most notably in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Thanos (Josh Brolin) proved himself to be unbelievably strong and almost unbeatable. However, one of the MCU’s weapons was capable of defeating the Mad Titan, even though it’s been pretty bad at actually accomplishing its purpose.

While Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) killed Thanos and his armies with the Infinity Stones, sacrificing his own life in the process, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) had a different technique when going toe-to-toe with the Mad Titan. The God of Thunder has had the honor of using some of the most powerful and significant weapons in the MCU’s history, including the enchanted hammer Mjolnir and his father’s signature spear, Gungnir. We’ll soon see Thor’s most powerful weapon back in action, but it’ll be another disappointing turn for the MCU’s Stormbreaker.

Marvel Zombies’ Trailer Repeats Thor’s Stormbreaker Move

Marvel Zombies is set to hit Disney+ on September 24, 2025, expanding on the universe first seen in What If…? season 1, episode 5, “What If… Zombies?!” A new trailer for the four-part animated series has made us even more excited for the upcoming project, revealing that the early days of the zombie apocalypse will be explored, as well as the aftermath of the What If…? episode. This includes reintroducing us to Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Ant-Man’s head, who were last seen traveling to Wakanda with the Mind Stone in hopes of broadcasting the stone’s curative energy around the world.

In Wakanda, these alternate versions of Peter Parker, T’Challa, and Scott Lang are to be met by a zombified version of Thanos, who already has five of the six Infinity Stones. The trailer reveals that Spider-Man will try and kill Thanos with Stormbreaker, just as Thor did in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. However, also just like Thor, Spider-Man will fail to bring down the Mad Titan with the ax, despite it penetrating Thanos’ chest in exactly the same way it did back in the MCU’s Phase 3.

Zombie Thanos first appeared at the end of What If…? season 1, episode 5, teasing the continuation of the story set in the zombie-infested universe. This outbreak began when Hank Pym went to collect Janet van Dyne from the Quantum Realm โ€“ during the events of 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp โ€“ only for her to return with a Quantum Virus that subsequently infects a huge percentage of Earth’s population, including some significant heroes. Hudson Thames will be reprising his role of Spider-Man in the series, and he’ll be joined by an exciting new voice cast in Marvel Zombies.

What is Stormbreaker’s History in the MCU?

When Thanos made his way to Wakanda for the final battle of Avengers: Infinity War, he was fought by all the Avengers and Wakandans who had already gathered to take on Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Cull Obsidian, and the Outriders. All proved incapable of bringing down the Mad Titan, however, but Thor almost sealed the deal with Stormbreaker โ€“ย his newly-forged ax from Nidavellir. Stormbreaker was strong enough to withstand energy from all six Infinity Stones and plant itself in Thanos’ chest, but, as we all know, Thor “should have gone for the head.”

Thanos still snapped his fingers and survived this attack, allowing him to complete his mission and retire to the Garden. It’s there that Thor eventually used Stormbreaker to decapitate Thanos and let the weapon live up to its purpose, but the damage had already been done and half the universe’s population had already been disintegrated. Marvel Zombies is set to repeat Thor’s biggest mistake from Avengers: Infinity War by making Spider-Man unable to bring down the zombified Thanos with Stormbreaker.

Going for the head would have made Stormbreaker successful yet again. In Infinity War, separating Thanos’ head from his body would have saved half the universe and avoided five years of turmoil during the Blip, while in Marvel Zombies, going for the head would eliminate zombie Thanos as a threat to the world’s remaining heroes. After Marvel Zombies, Stormbreaker will have a success rate of one out of three, which is seriously disappointing for one of the MCU’s most powerful weapons.
