While we don’t get to cartoon version of Leonard, Sheldon, Penny, Wolowitz, Koothrappali, Amy, or Bernadette, Sunday night’s couch gag for The Simpsons — the longest-running scripted series in television history — parodies The Big Bang Theory‘s memorable theme song.

The altered lyrics to the Barenaked Ladies’ song include: “The whole Fox network was in a hot, dense state/Then nearly 14 billion years ago they began a TV show/Then Bart tried to sell his soul/Lisa turned to vegetables/Grampa started fighting bulls/Springfield built a wall (The Who played on the top)/Carl, Lenny, Barney, Moe and a fat, bald guy who hollers d’oh/That all started with the Simpsons (D’oh)!”
Back in a 2010 interview, BNL singer/songwriter Ed Robertson explained how the band end up writing and performing the theme song for the CBS sitcom. “[The Big Bang Theory creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prad] contacted me and I had literally just finished reading a book by this British particle physicist named Simon Singh,” Robertson shared with NewsOK. “The book is called ‘Big Bang’ โฆ so it’s a book that walks you through cosmological theory from the moment of the big bang up to present. I finish reading that book and then I get a call from Los Angeles from Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, ‘Would you like to write the theme song to a new sitcom called “The Big Bang Theory?”‘ I know, right? It was amazing.”
