The DCU’s Best Team Might Have Just Recruited a New Member

The primary reason for assembling a team in a comic book project is that a major threat is looking to destroy the world. Lex Luthor’s surveillance of metahumans in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice alerts Bruce Wayne to the existence of heroes worldwide, who will be ready to fight when danger strikes in Justice League. However, after Steppenwolf goes down and Apokolips’ invasion of Earth is canceled, Superman and Co. go their separate ways. They’re friendly with each other, sure, but they’re not the kind of group that goes out for drinks together after a hard-fought battle and does karaoke.

Despite taking a more light-hearted approach than its predecessor, James Gunn’s DC Universe isn’t doing things all that differently in the team department. The Justice Gang, like the Justice League, is made up of powerful heroes, but they don’t really like each other. They bicker constantly, and only keep doing the job because it makes them look good. Fortunately, there’s at least one team in the DCU that does it for the love of the game, and it may be on its way to getting a new member.

The 11th Street Kids Go All Out to Save Peacemaker

Despite turning over a new leaf after saving the world from the Butterflies, Christopher Smith can’t catch a break in Season 2 of Peacemaker. Rick Flag Sr. wants to bring the anti-hero in for killing his son, believing that revenge is the best way forward. The new director of A.R.G.U.S. can’t just arrest anyone he wants, though, so he sends John Economos to spy on his friend. Throwing his bosses off the scent doesn’t work for Economos, who has to deal with his handler, Langston Fleury, who constantly talks about his bird blindness. Thankfully, a brief window allows Economos to warn Smith after Flag gives the go-ahead to move in on him. Peacemaker escapes with the Quantum Unfolding Chamber and sets it up in an abandoned cabin.

The plan is for Peacemaker to head to the alternate universe he’s been hanging out in, but he needs to talk to Emilia Harcourt first. Their meeting in Season 2, Episode 5 gets messy because there are A.R.G.U.S. agents everywhere, with Harcourt having to save Smith when Flag gives the order to kill him. Peacemaker is taken into custody instead, and Flag gives him a good beating before Sasha Bordeaux comes into the room and informs her boss that Economos booked him, making the whole thing official. Economos knows he’s going to get an earful from the higher-ups, but there’s one person who offers him nothing but praise: Fleury. It appears that one of Flag’s top agents might be having second thoughts, which could be a huge help to the 11th Street Kids down the line.

Langston Fleury Could Be the Ace Up Peacemaker’s Sleeve

Harcourt’s rejection and Flag’s inability to forgive push Smith to walk out of his own universe and into another. Leota Adebayo and Adrian Chase arrive too late to stop their friend, but not all hope is lost. The 11th Street Kids have access to the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, and after a push from Harcourt, they decide they’re going to use it to get their friend back. The mission won’t be easy, of course, because Flag reveals that he doesn’t just want Peacemaker but also the alien technology that he owns. It looks like the full force of A.R.G.U.S. will come down on Peacemaker’s new home, and it’s going to take more than the Top Trio to stop it. A man on the inside might do the trick, though, especially if he’s near the top of the food chain.

In addition to disliking his boss’ attitude, Fleury is also catching onto the fact that Flag is playing favorites, potentially striking up a relationship with Bordeaux. If getting promoted isn’t on the table for the agent, he may be more inclined to help Peacemaker and Co. out, wanting to look good before the whole structure comes falling down. That’s not to say everyone will embrace Fleury, as Economos can’t stand him, but all the 11th Street Kids do is argue, so there’s nothing wrong with adding another fiery personality to the mix.

Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
