Lady Gaga & Netflix Just Outdid One of Disney’s Biggest 2025 Movies

The body-swap comedy is a Hollywood staple, a reliable formula for generating laughs and heartfelt moments by forcing two wildly different people to live each other’s lives. For decades, Disney has been the undisputed champion of this subgenre, with Freaky Friday serving as its crown jewel, which got a sequel, Freakier Friday, earlier this year. The sequel saw the return of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, this time roped into a multi-generational swap. Released in August 2025, the film was a bona fide hit, earning over $135 million at the global box office as of early September. With an economical production budget of $42 million, the movie more than tripled its cost, establishing itself as a rare commercial success for Disney in an otherwise challenging year.

What no one saw coming, however, was a challenger from the gothic halls of Nevermore Academy. In its second season, Netflix’s megahit Wednesday dedicated an entire episode to the classic premise. With a little supernatural push from a new character played by Lady Gaga, the series delivered a version of the body-swap that was not funnier than its big-screen competition.

The catalyst for chaos in Wednesday Season 2 arrives in the sixth episode, while Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) looks for a solution to recover her psychic powers. On the advice of her grandmother, she seeks out the grave of Rosaline Rotwood, a legendary deceased seer and former Nevermore teacher, in the hopes of a supernatural tune-up. This is where Lady Gaga makes her brief but pivotal appearance as the ghostly, all-white-clad spirit of Rosaline. Rotwood agrees to help but warns Wednesday that if the ritual is interrupted, there will be a “deadly trick” to pay.

Unfortunately, Wednesday’s ever-present and ever-energetic roommate, Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), bursts in at the critical moment, effectively interrupting the ritual. As a result, the two roommates wake up the next morning having swapped bodies. Wednesday, a creature of monochrome and misery, is suddenly trapped in the vibrant, bubbly, social-media-savvy existence of a werewolf. Meanwhile, the perpetually cheerful Enid must navigate the world from behind Wednesday’s famously unblinking, dead-eyed stare.

The brilliance of the body-swap episode is anchored by the two stars. For a season and a half, Ortega crafted a globally recognized performance defined by its intense restraint and stillness. The episode shatters that mold completely. As Enid-in-Wednesday’s-body, Ortega is a burst of wide-eyed energy, flailing her limbs with joyous abandon and even flashing full-toothed smiles. A scene where she forces Wednesday’s body to perform a high-energy dance routine to BLACKPINK in the school’s quad is an instant series highlight, a moment of pure, unadulterated fun that showcases Ortega’s incredible comedic range.

Even more impressive is the work done by Myers, who faced the arguably more difficult task of perfectly replicating the minimalist mannerisms her co-star had made iconic. Myers nails it. She adopts Wednesday’s rigid posture, masters the subtle head tilt, and delivers lines with the perfect deadpan cadence, making her portrayal both uncanny and deeply funny. In addition, because the personalities are such extreme opposites, the swap forces the two friends to inhabit each other’s worlds, leading to a deeper understanding of their respective strengths and achieving genuine emotional growth.

Wednesday Season 2 is currently available on Netflix.
