WWE has been hyping the match-up between AJ Styles and John Cena as a WrestleMania caliber kind of match, but a lot of eyes will be looking towards the actual Money In The Bank match itself. This year, there will be six competitors all aiming to retrieve the Money In The Bank briefcase, which guarantees a World Championship opportunity within a year.
Cesaro, Chris Jericho, Sami Zayn, The Miz, Dean Ambrose, Alberto Del Rio, and Kevin Owens will fight it out to claim the briefcase, but there’s only one name among that list that seems like the logical choice and our pick to win the Money In The Bank.
Kevin Owens.
Just a little over two years on the roster, Owens has demonstrated why he’s one of the best that the WWE has to offer and follow along as we talk about why he’s the logical choice to win that contract.
Former Intercontiental Champion
ย
Owens has already held the Intercontinental Championship on two separate occasions as well as the NXT Championship. The IC title has been seen through the years as the “workhorse” title, a stepping stone to having a chance to prove your worth to make it to the world championship circle.ย
He’s done that in spades.ย
While he was champion, he defended the title against a slew of opponents in a variety of matches, and in the process making him look like a bona fide star. The IC title has been given to less than stellar superstars in the past decade who have made less than an impression, but in Owens’ hands, the prestigious strap meant something because it meant something to him.ย
He’s Held His Own Against John Cena
ย
John Cena is the undisputed face of the company and, without a doubt, the man to beat if you want to make it in WWE.ย
Kevin Owens has already done that.ย
Last year, Owens and Cenaย had a star-making feud while Owens was still NXT Champion. Owens beat Cenaย clean at Elimination Chamber after a twenty-minute match to a shocked audience. Owens proved to the WWEย Universe that he was a force to be reckoned with and nobody will stand in his way. Not even Big Match John.ย
Beating John Cenaย has sort of been reserved for an elite class these days. With Cenaย personifying the last generation and with Owens being a flag-bearer of the New Era, it could be a sign of things of great things to come for Owens being a future franchise player himself.ย
Speaking of the New Era…
New Era On The Rise
ย
The phrase of the year so far in the WWEย has been “New Era”.ย
The New Era is seemingly what the WWEย is focusing on now, aside from the past mainstays like John Cena, a soon to be returning Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, and the random Undertaker encounter. Guys like current WWEย World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, the New Day, the recent NXT call ups like the Vaudevillains, and of course, Kevin Owens are leading the way of Superstars that are looking to take the company’s reigns for the next decade.ย
With a guy like Owens, you have an established heel who can make anybody he works with look great, and at the same time, show off what why he’s going to be helping lead the way for the rest to follow.ย
He Has The Years And Experience To Back Him Up
ย
Before he was Kevin Owens, he wrestled under his real name of Kevin Steen in the independent circuits for 16 years. He made his professional debut at the age of 16, and has performed for a number of major independent promotions such as Ring of Honor and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, capturing both of their world championships on a few occasions.ย
The WWEย seems to be high on recruiting independent stars since NXT transitioned from a reality show to its own brand and Owens fit right into that mold when he signed in 2014. Owens has years of experience and can adapt to any sort of style, while remaining himself in the process. Should Owens win the briefcase and eventually cash in, he will be the second wrestler to have won the ROH, NXT, and WWEย Championships, right after Seth Rollins.ย
Though Owens has a 1 in 6 chances of winning tonight, and while Dean Ambrose might seem as the odds-on favorite, Kevin Owens is the logical choice to claim the prize and be that much closer to the WWEย World Heavyweight Championship.ย
What do you think, readers? Do you think Owens stands a chance? If not, who do you think will take the briefcase home?ย
