Star Wars: The Force Awakens was one of the biggest box office successes of all time, but one of its stars promises the sequel will be even bigger. Speaking to Variety at the Cannes Festival, John Boyega was asked about the transition between working for JJ Abrams, the director of The Force Awakens, and the director of the upcoming film, Rian Johnson. Boyega replied that [i]t's very easy. Rian Johnson is great. It's a different take, darker, bigger." Boyega even preemptively shut down doubters by pointing out that "[s]omeone will say: 'How do you get bigger than Force Awakens?' But it's crazy."

Boyega also addressed a potential romance between his character Finn and DaisyRidley's Rey. "Yes, Finn and Rey – they're just friends. Finn is a storm trooper, so he doesn't really know what's going on. So the romance thing is something that's going to be interesting in the next installment. It's not going to go the way you think it's going to go."

However, Boyega dodged questions about the path Finn would take in Episode VIII, joking that Disney has spies everywhere, and if he answered that question he might not be alive to appear in Episode IX.

Star Wars: Episode VIII will be released on December 15, 2017.
