Spielberg Star Wars

For Director Steven Spielberg, nothing is really off limits. He's taken on action adventure, drama, comedy, and science fiction, and throughout his career, he's met with mostly success.

There is one project he won't take on, and that's Star Wars. In an interview with the Toronto Sun, Spielberg describes why he's crossed the fan favorite series off of his wish list.

"I'm never going to make a Star Wars film. That's not my genre. It's certainly my buddy's — the Thomas Edison of science fiction, George Lucas, who created the entire series. But that was never for me. I'm just a fan; I'm just with everybody else in the audience watching them."

I get the sentiment, especially in regards to Lucas. They've been friends for a long time, and have enjoyed immense success in their previous partnerships. I do find it odd that he would say" That's not my genre", as he's tackled both science fiction and adventure films before, which Star Wars is just a mashup of anyway.

At the moment, Spielberg is doing press for his upcoming film, The BFG, which tackles an element that the acclaimed director doesn't have much experience with, that being the power of magic.

"This was an open and closed-ended excursion in the imagination of magic. I haven't done anything really in my entire career to do with alchemy; real magic. So for me (The BFG) was an original adventure and I had the best time on it. I worked for three years on it and the worst moment I had was when I finished the movie."

Even if he says no now, never say never. If the right project in the Star Wars universe comes along, I think he would at least consider it.

The BFG hits theatres on July 1st.
