Don't call it a comeback - well, not yet, at least. While Joss Whedon's popularity surged to untold heights following his directorial stint at Marvel Studios, the famed filmmaker bowed out from the superhero franchise a couple years back. However, after speaking with IGN at this year's San Diego Comic Con, it looks like Whedon would reconsider a return to Marvel for a solo Black Widow film.

When was asked if he'd be willing to stage a Marvel comeback for the fan-favorite character, Whedon answered without hesitation. He said, "Well, if somebody pointed at me and said, 'Do you want to make a Black Widow movie,' the answer would be 'duh' for two reasons."

And what could those two reasons be? Well, they come down to the hero's complex history and on-screen portrayal. Whedon explained that Black Widow, "is very interesting and very earthbound, so it's the kind of action that I got to do less of. Somebody like Thor [and] The Vision, when you get into your 'Superman' territory, it's harder to maintain that sort of gritty action." Obviously, when it comes to Black Widow, her back story doesn't involve feuding Norse gods or any Infinity Stone nonsense. Rather, her dark past is created by the deeply warped sensibilities of mankind — something which Whedon would love to explore further.

In fact, he said he'd really liked to, "to do a spy-thriller. Like, really do a good, paranoid sort of John le Carré on-crack kind of thing. That would be really fun."

And, secondly, Whedon's return would be influenced in part by Scarlett Johansson who plays Black Widow. Clearly fond of the actress, he said that she, "is just delightful. She works really hard, but she just spends most of her time cracking me up."

Of course, there's no official word on whether a Black Widow film will come to the MCU, even though it's been teased in the past. So, for now, Whedon is continuing his work on other projects which include a variety of Dark Horse comics and original screenplays. But, if the call should come, it wouldn't be surprising to see Whedon suit up once more as a Marvel director if Black Widow were at stake.
