The 42nd episode of Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon features the long-awaited return of Ash Ketchum's longtime allies, Brock and Misty, who bring updates on their respective family members.
When asked by Ash who's the leader of the Pewter Gym — Kanto's rock-based gym once headed by Brock — the rock-solid Pokémon trainer reveals his younger brother, Forrest, is the Pewter Gym Leader tasked with awarding the Boulder Badge to Pokémon trainers who manage to defeat him in battle.
Misty, leader of Cerulean City's water-based gym, shares her trio of sensational sisters — Daisy, Violet, and Lily — "ditched the gym and are off on a trip somewhere," an update that Brock finds particularly upsetting.
The episode ("Alola at Kantō! [Brock] and [Misty]!!"), which aired in Japan September 14 and has yet to make its way to the U.S., sees Ash returning to the Kanto region where he reunites with old Pokémon and friends Brock, Misty, and Professor Oak. Meanwhile, the Pokémon from the Alola region get lost in Oak's lab, and Ash once again has yet another encounter with Team Rocket.
The anime is also celebrating its 20th anniversary, airing 993 episodes since its 1997 debut. Sun & Moon's 42nd episode is significant for being Brock's first appearance since episode 807 and Misty's first in-person appearance since episode 411. Brock and Misty were again featured in episode 43, airing September 21 in Japan.
Pokémon Sun & Moon has proved a success, accompanying the video game previously earlier under the same title. The games, part of the series' seventh generation, stand as some of Nintendo's fastest selling games ever, with over 14.6 million copies sold worldwide since the end of 2016.
Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon airs Thursdays on Tokyo TV in Japan and Saturday mornings on Disney XD in the United States.
