It very rare for a film to gross over $870 million at the worldwide box office and be considered a disappointment, but that's the case for Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

However, strong DVD and Blu-ray sales could change that perception, and it got off to a great start, debuting at No. 1 on the NPD VideoScan First Alert sales chart, Variety reports.

Batman v Superman is seeing "70% of its copies sold coming from the Blu-ray format." That unusually large number can be attributed to the Ultimate Edition (extended cut) being available on Blu-ray, but not on the standalone DVD version.

While that 70% first-week Blu-ray percentage is incredibly high for a major theatrical release new to disc, the record is 83% and belongs to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate's The Divergent Series: Allegiant, the third film in the series, fell to No. 2 in its second frame. It sold "just 12% as many copies as" Batman v Superman. Sony Pictures' Miracles From Heaven took third-place, Disney's Zootopia held on for fourth, and DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda 3 clung to fifth.

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City's own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis's most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it's ever known before.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film also stars Oscar nominees Amy Adams ("American Hustle," "Man of Steel") as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg ("The Social Network") as Lex Luthor, Diane Lane ("Unfaithful," "Man of Steel") as Martha Kent, and Laurence Fishburne ("What's Love Got to Do with It," "Man of Steel") as Perry White; Oscar winners Jeremy Irons ("Reversal of Fortune") as Alfred, and Holly Hunter ("The Piano") as Senator Finch; and Gal Gadot (the "Fast and Furious" films) as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition is now available on Digital HD and Blu-ray.
