Steven Universe Getting A New Role-Playing Game For PS4, Xbox One This Summer

Steven Universe has become kind of the crown jewel of the Cartoon Network line-up as of late, and now fans can happily indulge in a new video game adventure featuring everyone's favorite hero and his friends.

Previously reported on Gamefly, the game is called Steven Universe: Save the Light, and it has a motif that will be quite familiar to fans of the Paper Mario games, with a 2D-style approach and a spiffy art style that really brings Steven's universe to life. The game, currently being developed by Grumpyface, is in the works for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and is slated to arrive sometime this summer.

Save the Light follows in the footsteps in the previously released Attack the Light role-playing adventure that came out for mobile devices in 2015. In it, Steven and the Crystal Gems must protect the Prism, which played such a key factor in the original game, from a dangerous new presence.

Each character has special abilities that come in handy when it comes to solving puzzles and taking on certain foes within the game. For instance, Greg, a bard, can play songs on his guitar that enhances his allies, while others can use attacks, like Amethyst and her whip.

This adventure features a variety of characters from the hit show, and you can form up a battle party with up to seven different warriors, so that you've always got a good group on hand.

At launch, Save the Light will have an impressive roster of characters, including Steven's dad Greg, and more will be added via DLC following the game's release, though a schedule hasn't been provided just yet.

As for the battle system, you'll be able to take "action pauses" over the course of each encounter, so you can select attacks accordingly – thus, the Paper Mario similarities. But it's a system that both younger players and die-hard RPG fans will able to easily adapt to. You can also form better relationships with your party members, which adds a whole new layer of strategy to the game.

Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar worked closely with Grumpyface on the development of the game, so it's definitely got the same influence – and magic – of the TV show. The developer has noted that it'll take a good amount of time to complete (about 10 to 12 hours), so it's a nice way for fans and younger players to breeze through the summer days.
