Collecting rings isn’t as easy as it used to be. Sonic the Hedgehog has two games coming out this year, the retro Sonic Mania and the more modern Sonic Forces, and both of them will be sold at a budget price. Sonic Mania will be $20 and it seems as though Sonic Forces will only be $40. That’s a bit of a surprise, as most expected Sonic Forces to cost a full $60, seeing as it’s the next big 3D entry in the series.
Sega itself has yet to confirm the price of Sonic Forces, but the game is available for pre-order in Europe, and numerous online retailers, including Amazon, are listing the game for about 40 euros, which translates to around $45. You can check out screencap of an Amazon Spain listing for Sonic Forces, below:
Typically, games cost roughly the same in euros as they do in American dollars, so it’s likely we’ll also see a $40 price tag. Sonic Forces isn’t yet available for pre-order in North America, but they should open up soon.
So, why’s Sonic Forces selling for a mere $40? Well, Sega could be trying to differentiate themselves from the rest of the $60 pack – it’s not that uncommon for platformers and other kid-friendly games to sell for a bit less. The recently-released Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy only costs $40, and has been very successful.
Of course, since this is a Sonic game, there’s another possibility – maybe Sega is trying to offset the fact that the game isn’t very good. Sega recently revealed some new Sonic Forces footage (check it out, below), and the game is looking a bit rough. Perhaps that $40 price tag is a good idea.
Sonic Forces dashes on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch later this year.
