San Diego Comic-Con attendees are reeling from the first details revealed for Captain Marvel. And while audiences still have to wait almost two years to see Marvel Studios' first female-led solo film, some are beginning to speculate about the film's plot - and what it could mean for the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Which leads us to a very important question - could we see Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) lose the use of his left eye in Captain Marvel?
With the revelation that Captain Marvel will be set in the early 1990s, Fury is said to have the use of both of his eyes at that point in the MCU timeline. Normally, the event of Fury losing the use of his eye wouldn't be something fans would expect to see onscreen - except when you consider a line that was attached to it in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In a conversation with Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), Fury says the following: "The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye."
Could it be that that event occurred while Fury was fighting alongside Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson)? While the exact dynamic between Fury and Carol is unknown, it's not out of the question that the pair could end the movie on less-than-positive terms. With the duo going up against one of Marvel Comics' most significant cosmic villains, the Skrulls - and with Carol coming into her origins as Captain Marvel within the film - it's entirely plausible that some sort of accident could occur along the way, injuring Fury in the process.
This could also potentially explain - depending on the extent it is featured in the film - why Carol has been absent from the MCU's subsequent proceedings, despite becoming a superhero ten to fifteen years before Tony Stark made his first Iron Man suit. If Carol and Fury's fight against the Skrulls caused quite a bit of destruction - including a severe injury for Fury - Carol might feel the need to separate herself from Earth, further developing her powers (and possibly fighting more Skrulls) somewhere in space.
Of course, this is all just speculation at this point. But still, it's not out of the question that we could see Fury's tragic accident in Captain Marvel - which would provide a nice bookend to Fury's arc in Winter Soldier, as well as further connect the intricate web of the MCU.
