Thor may have missed out on the superhero showdown in Captain America: Civil War, but Thor: Ragnarok is set to shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe in its own way.
According to executive producer Brad Winderbaum, Thor: Ragnarok will change the cosmic order of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in much the same way that Captain America: The Winter Soldier changed the balance of power on Earth with regards to SHIELD and Hydra.
"Just as in Winter Soldier, we kind of broke down some of the real fundamental ideas about the MCU that you took for granted, specifically SHIELD," Winderbaum said during a press visit to the set of Thor: Ragnarok in Australia. "I think that also in Phase One, we established this cosmology that involved Asgard and Odin and certain ideas of things that you just thought were eternal and could never change. And what this film does is it breaks them down in a very similar way that Winter Soldier broke down SHIELD."
Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will remember that Captain America: The Winter Soldiers revealed that SHIELD had been infiltrated by Hydra for decades and that the terrorist organization was secretly using SHIELD to achieve its own goals.
By the end of the film, SHIELD had been basically destroyed, the ramifications of which were most visibly felt in Marvel's Agents of SHIELD on ABC. However, those ripples also played out in the events of other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies like Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War.
It's unclear what exactly Winderbaum is hinting at in regards to how that kind of change could be replicated on a cosmic scale. Could Asgard be wiped out for good? Could the World Tree that connects the nine realms die? With Thanos and his Black Order headed for Earth, this kind of cosmic shake-up could have significant ramifications for Avengers: Infinity War.
