Marvel Studios will be three-for-three in 2017 when box office totals for Thor: Ragnarok hit over the weekend.

The Thor threequel, now in theaters, will easily prove itself worthy as it takes the #1 spot at the box office, beating out weak earners Jigsaw, Geostorm and Blade Runner 2049. Per Variety, Fandango says Thor: Ragnarok out-sold Spider-Man: Homecoming at a similar point in its sales cycle, and also surpassed 2011's Thor and 2013's Thor: The Dark World.

Spider-Man: Homecoming — which was creatively produced by Disney-owned Marvel Studios but distributed and paid for by Sony Pictures, who retained the box office profits — webbed up a $117 million opening weekend back in July and eventually grossed $879 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing superhero movie of 2017.

Though Thor brought in $449 million worldwide in 2011 and Thor: The Dark World earned $644 million worldwide this time in 2013, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect Thor: Ragnarok to dethrone Spidey's first solo foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ragnarok is fueled by near-universal high praise: though it now stands at 94% certified fresh on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the Taika Waitit-directed film was for a time Marvel's highest-rated movie ever.

Thor: Ragnarok (94%, 209 reviews) is now nestled between Iron Man (94% with 268 reviews) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%, 300 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes' ratings ranks of the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ragnarok has already successfully launched in many markets overseas, and is tracking huge for its US bow: after bringing in $109 million in its worldwide debut, the Asgardian Avenger is gearing up to haul in as much as $400 million worldwide by Sunday. The Mighty Thor indeed.

Marvel Studios' first hit of the year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, raked in $863 million worldwide following its domestic release in May. Landing somewhere in the $800 million range is doable for Thor, even with rival Warner Bros. releasing superhero epic Justice League in just two weeks.
