According to the Canadian provincial government’s website — which holds the classifications for movie trailers, commercials and PSAs — the project, previously referred to as simply “Animated Spider-Man,” will be titled Animated Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
Sony Pictures has yet to officially reveal the title for the previously Untitled Animated Spider-Man film.
The official Sony Pictures Twitter account teased the first look at the film will debut at Brazil Comic-Con on December 9, which runs at 1:06 minutes and should confirm the animated movie’s official title.
Sony previously unveiled the first posters from the film at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas earlier this year.
Marvel Comics launched the “Spider-Verse” event with The Amazing Spider-Man #9 in November 2014, which united Spider-Men (and women) from multiple universes and continuities against a major threat.
Marvel included all iterations of the wall-crawler and introduced new versions of Spider-Man, and saw Peter Parker of the 616 universe — the flagship continuity — team with Ultimate Spider-Man (Miles Morales), Spider-Man 2099 (Miguel O’Hara), Spider-Woman (Gwen Stacy) and more.
Marvel’s Spider-Man — the newest cartoon featuring the web-slinger airing on Disney XD — has already explored the concept of the Spider-Verse, teaming a teenaged Spider-Man (Robbie Daymond) with Miles Morales (Nadji Jeter) and Gwen Stacy (Laura Bailey). Previously released promo art showcased the three heroes in their Spider-guises.
Animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse puts the focus on Miles Morales, an Afro-Latino New York teen who is endowed with amazing powers similar to those of the Peter Parker Spider-Man after a bite from a genetically engineered spider.
Miles is voiced by Shameik Moore (Dope, The Get Down) with Mahershala Ali (Luke Cage) and Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) voicing his uncles, Aaron and Jefferson Davis. Liev Schreiber lends his voice to the film’s villain in a yet-to-be-revealed role.
Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians) and Bob Persichetti direct from a script by The LEGO Movie writer-director team Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Rodney Rothman (22 Jump Street).
The film is set to open December 14, 2018.
