If you are a fan of Doctor Who, then you can now dive into the rebooted series' tenth season. The comeback dropped this weekend after an extended hiatus, and fans of the Time Lord were pleased to see the Doctor in one piece. Peter Capaldi returned as the alien time traveler, and he was joined on-screen by a new companion named Bill. However, for those fans who are staunchly pro-Capaldia, the debut was a bittersweet one. The tenth season of Doctor Who will mark the actor's final go at the Doctor, and fans are still hoping the exit is an elaborate prank of some sort.

However, it looks less likely that Capaldi is jerking fans around. Not only has Doctor Who made several statements about the actor's leave, but the franchise is already looking to bring on a new star who Capaldi's Doctor can regenerate into. Ahead of the tenth season's premiere, Capaldi opened up about his choice to leave the series, and the beloved actor told fans he wasn't keen on being stuck in a television factory.
Recently, Capaldi appeared on The Graham Norton Show, and the star was asked about his impending leave. It was there that actor said he wanted to exit the series on a high note and prevent himself from getting franchise fatigue.
"Doctor Who is a great job, but it is a bit of a television factory. You do twelve episodes a year, and I just worried that I wouldn't be able to continue to do my best work. I like to be able to learn the lines and do some preparation and come in and give it some vigor and not hate it. I just figure, while you're enjoying it, leave," he explained.
News broke that Capaldi would be leaving the show back in January 2017. The official Doctor Who Twitter shared a message from the actor which read, "It (the new series of Doctor Who) will be my last… I feel it's time to move on."
Later, a longer statement from the actor was published by the BBC. "One of the greatest privileges of being Doctor Who is to see the world at its best," Capaldi wrote in a statement published by the BBC. "From our brilliant crew and creative team working for the best broadcaster on the planet, to the viewers and fans whose endless creativity, generosity and inclusiveness points to a brighter future ahead. I can't thank everyone enough. It's been cosmic."
For now, there is no word on how Capaldi's Doctor will regenerate or under what kind of circumstances. Reports have started to spread that the BBC is looking at Kris Marshall for the role, but the folks behind the show did say casting had only entered its beginning stages not long ago.
