SYFY Orders Happy! To Series, Offers First Look At Nick Sax

Move over, Walking Dead! Image has another hit comic coming to the small screen, as SYFY has given Grant Morrison's Happy! a series order.

The announcement came as a part of SYFY's 'Reboot' initiative, where the network is aiming to focus more heavily on specific types of audiences. One of the big focuses for the network going forward will be the concentration on comic book fans. SYFY certainly delivered on that promise, as first season orders were given to Happy!, as well as the Superman prequel series, Krypton.

If you're not familiar with the source material, Happy! is a limited series graphic novel from All-Star Superman author, Grant Morrison. The comic follows Nick Sax, a drunken ex-cop, who has an unfortunate run-in with fate, in the form of a cartoon horse named Happy. It sounds a bit odd, but the book is a great mix of witty charm and street-level brutality.

In addition to the series announcement, SYFY has unveiled the first look at Nick Sax, played by Christopher Meloni. When you put the live-action iteration of the character beside his comic counterpart, it's easy to see the show has made a spot-on adaptation.

Joining Meloni in the cast is Saturday Night Live star Bobby Moynihan, who will be voicing Happy. Grant Morrison has co-written the pilot script, and Patrick MacManus will serve as showrunner.

SYFY hasn't given any official release date for the new series, but the press release indicated that both Happy! and Krypton will be joining the 2017/2018 TV line-up.

Up Next: SYFY Producing New Series From Game of Thrones Author

Universal Cable Productions' HAPPY! is based on New York Times best-selling author Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson's graphic novel of the same name. The series follows Nick Sax (Christopher Meloni, "Law & Order: SVU") – an intoxicated, corrupt ex-cop turned hit man – who is adrift in a world of casual murder, soulless sex and betrayal. After a hit gone wrong, his inebriated life is forever changed by a tiny, relentlessly positive, imaginary blue winged horse named "Happy" (Bobby Moynihan, "Saturday Night Live").

Executive producers Grant Morrison ("Batman," "The Invisibles") and Brian Taylor ("Crank," "Gamer") co-wrote the pilot teleplay. Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty and Toby Jaffe of Original Film ("The Fast and the Furious" franchise), Meloni and showrunner Patrick Macmanus will also executive produce. Taylor directed the pilot.
