Looper director Rian Johnson has the rather unenviable job of following in the footsteps of J.J. Abrams in the Star Wars franchise.

While it's not quite as epic as Abrams's responsibility succeeding creator George Lucas, Johnson will direct Episode VIII with its immediate predecessor being the best-received Star Wars movie since The Empire Strikes Back and the highest grossing film in North American history.

If there's one person who thinks Johnson -- one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood for the last couple of years -- is capable of the job, it's Star Wars franchise villain Adam Driver.

Driver, who plays Kylo Ren in the new trilogy, told EW that "Their temperaments are different," comparing Johnson to Abrams, with whom Driver worked on The Force Awakens. "I feel like there was so many moving pieces in the first one – just trying to solve it and set the vocabulary for what it was. There's a lot of that anxiety is gone, because people have developed a language. I think it's more of a testament to Rian coming into something very established and making it [his own]. I can't wait to get on set, just because he's so unassuming and intelligent and approachable. The script they've come up with is really great."

The film is in production now, and due in theaters in December of 2018.
