In the just-released trailer for Warner Bros.'s Wonder Woman, there's no shortage of World War I imagery.

Since the movie was set nearly a century in the past, fans likely expected the world around Diana to match that -- especially since audiences already saw a World War I-era photo of Diana, Steve Trevor, and other members of the Wonder Woman supporting cast in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

But as Trevor slid below the wings of World War I German fighter planes, it was hard not to wonder whether at some point in the film, he might not come up against Hans von Hammer, better known to DC fans as Enemy Ace.

Enemy Ace is the name of a DC character created in 1965 by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert. He was the greatest German fighting ace of World War I, scoring impressive victories against Allied fighters, but he also lived by a strict code of ethics and sense of honor.

Later in life, von Hammer would refuse to serve the Nazi regime after seeing the full scope of the horrors for which they were responsible in the later years of World War II.

Just the existence of German World War I pilots feels like something that would suggest von Hammer is a likely candidate for an appearance in Wonder Woman. That Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had dozens of Easter eggs, some pretty obscure, it seems unlikely that this opportunity would be allowed to pass them by.

Wonder Woman, which stars Gal Gadot, will be in theaters in early 2017 from director Patty Jenkins. Other actors in the film include Chris Pine, star of Star Trek Beyond, as Steve Trevor. It seems like a non-powered war character like Enemy Ace could be an ideal foil for Steve Trevor while Wonder Woman fights the "real" powerful villains.
