When the new year rolls in, FOX's Gotham will be bringing with it a rather familiar character. Everyone's favorite unhinged resident of Gotham is making a long-awaited return to his city. The show's midseason finale ended with a preview that promised Jerome Valeska will be coming back to Gotham. And, now, actor Cameron Monaghan is teasing fans with an image of his character's corpse.

The photo does not show much of Jerome's body, but it shows enough to make fans curious. Viewers can only see the top portion of the character's head, and it almost appears as if it has been skinned. Jerome's short, ginger hair can be seen - and his eyes are closed. Of course, that doesn't mean he's actually dead; Maybe Morena Baccarin's Leslie Thompkins should be a bit more careful.

After all, the medical practitioner is seen hovering over Jerome's corpse with a twisted expression. She keeps her gaze away from his pale face, and she is seen removing the white drape from Jerome's stiff body. Blood can be seen smeared along the sheet's edges, and it looks as if Leslie is in somewhat of a hurry.

Right now, there's nothing to indicate how this scene will tie-in with the rest of Gotham's third season, but fans are certain it will be the start of a thrilling storyline. When it comes to Gotham, Jerome has always been the number one suspect to become the Joker. And, for better or worse, Monaghan has been leading on fans with their Joker theories through some interesting social media updates.

Earlier this month, Monaghan finally sent fans into an all-out frenzy when he dropped an unexpected teaser on Twitter. The actor shared an image of himself in character as Jerome, and the Gotham alum was wearing one of the Joker's costumes. The actor was pictured with the villain's maniacal smile, and his face was caked with white foundation. His pale skin contrasted starkly with his slicked-back hair, and Monaghan's bright red lips had everyone shouting, 'Joker! Joker!'

For now, fans are eager to discover whether their Joker theories are right and just how Jerome has come back from the dead. The character died at the end of Gotham's first season, but executive producer John Stephens had told fans they would see more of Jerome.

"You'll have these underground movements that have started to talk about Jerome and what he represented and how he's going to come back like in the days of John the Baptist," Stephens told fans. "Setting the stage that if there is a Season 4, hopefully we'll bring that back in a much bigger way and you'll see these different versions of the Joker myth."
