Shin Godzilla Wins Picture of the Year In Japan

This year the Japanese Academy Awards, or more properly Japan Academy Prizes, celebrated its 40th anniversary ceremony today.

The award ceremony is similar to the American Academy Awards, giving out awards for all aspects of the Japanese film industry. The awards are run by the Nippon Academy-Sho Association, which consist of a Japanese group like tthe America's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Oscars fame. All of the nominees receive "Awards of Excellence," but the actual awards for each category was presented in a ceremony today at the Grand Prince Hotel in Tokyo. At the ceremony, there were surprises on some of the winners, but one movie swept the board winning seven different awards, Shin Godzilla.

Shin Godzilla had the honor of winning Picture of the Year and it's directors Anno and Higuchi also won Director of the Year. The live-action film also won awards for other categories listed below:

  • Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography thanks to Kousuke Yamada,
  • Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Direction with lighting director Takayuki Kawabe
  • Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction from the duo Yuji Hayashida and Eri Sakushima
  • Outstanding Achievement in Sound Recording by the pair Jun Nakamura and Haru Yamada
  • Outstanding Achievement in Film Editing by Hideaki Anno and Atsuki Sato
  • Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role from Hiroki Hasegawa
  • Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role with Satomi Ishihara and Mikako Ichikawa

All in all, there were 7 total of awards for the new live-action Godzilla film. Shin Godzilla shook the Japanese box office last year, not only being the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film of all time, but also the highest grossing live-action film released in the Japan last year.

For movies to be eligible in the awards, they have to have been opened in Japan between December 16, 2015, and December 15, 2016.

In similar news, Sunao Katabuchi's In This Corner of the World won Animation of the Year, and Makoto Shinkai's your name. won Screenplay of the year.
