Last weekend, the U.S was given its first widespread taste of Ghost in the Shell thanks to Paramount Pictures. The studio premiered Rupert Sanders’ live-action take on the franchise with Scarlett Johansson taking up its lead role. So far, the film has floundered with domestic audiences and churned out a paltry box office haul. But, when it comes to international markets, there are plenty of people ready to sink into the film’s cyberpunk world.

So, naturally, the animation studios behind Ghost in the Shell‘s iconic anime titles are wanting in on the hype. Not long ago, Kodansha and Production I.G. made a special joint announcement about the future of Ghost in the Shell. The series has been officially granted a new anime project under co-directors Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki.
The former director will be familiar to fans. Kamiyama worked on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. As for Aramaki, he is best known for his work on Appleseed. Right now, there is no information on what format the anime will be or when it will be released.
Production I.G. has been the face of Ghost in the Shell‘s anime ventures for decades now. The studio produced Mamoru Oshii’s pivotal animated take on the franchise back in 1995 before Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence debuted in 2004. The studio also produced Stand Alone Complex and a slew of other spinoff projects for Masamune Shirow’s series.
